C ancer is a group of diseases characterized by the development of abnormal cells that multiply uncontrollably. These cancer cells then infiltrate normal body tissues and vital organs and impact their normal function, ultimately resulting in death. Cancer has the ability to spread throughout the body over a short period of time (often months or a couple of years). Cancer is caused by both external factors (chemicals, radiation, smoking, and infections) and internal factors (genetics, immune conditions, and hormones).

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States. While there is no cure for many types of cancers, there has been significant progress in research and experimental treatments. More importantly, there have been more cancer awareness programs with an emphasis on prevention. It is estimated that more than half of all new cancers and cancer deaths are preventable by controlling the external or internal factors.

Many of us have heard that spices and herbs are good for health, but we hardly incorporate them into western cuisine. Even though there has been more awareness lately on the health benefits of herbs/spices as part of natural alternative or supplement to medicines, very few regularly incorporate spices and herbs in their diet. Some people hit nutritional stores to get natural supplements. While supplements are good, getting the same through natural foods is definitely preferable and can offer many nutrients that are not simply available in supplements.

Lately, more and more studies have been conducted on health benefits spices, herbs, and other natural, unprocessed foods. These studies have shown that natural foods, herbs, and spices are effective in preventing and treating many modern debilitating diseases such as cancer, heart diseases, and Alzheimer's.

This book focuses on factors causing cancer and prevention, through a proper diet, including foods that help in preventing cancer and recipes to help prepare them. While there are many foods that are known to have positive effects on cancer prevention, the focus of this book is three essential spices turmeric, ginger, and garlic, common ingredients in many food preparations. By liberally using these ingredients in cooking, many dishes can easily be transformed into cancer-fighting meals.

I have always loved cooking and always used spices in cooking due to my Asian heritage. But recently, I have started studying the many benefits of using spices and natural ingredients in food preparation. A healthy lifestyle can ward off many diseases and improve the quality of life for you and everyone around you. While I am a full convert to healthy living and lifestyle, I am hoping these books will inspire my children to live a healthy lifestyle at some point in their lives.

The lives of a number of my friends and colleagues have been impacted by cancer. This book is dedicated to their memory.
