About the Book
Safeguarding across the life span offers a unique and essential approach to safeguarding. It identifies the overlapping safeguarding concerns throughout the age continuum, such as violence against women and children, mothers with a mental health issue and their children, neglect of an older person. Many books on safeguarding present information for one group of clients, for example, children or adults. As practitioners we were aware that safeguarding practice requires an interdisciplinary approach, often with a need to address safeguarding concerns from an intergenerational perspective. With this in mind, we chose a non-binary approach towards the development of the book. Specific safeguarding concerns, such as online abuse, are addressed within each of the chapters and, where relevant, an intergenerational approach has been woven through. Signposting across chapters supports the reader to link information. References to concepts and themes that directly impact on the Life Course (examples of which include discrimination, isolation, decision-making, reflective practice, abuse/power) are addressed throughout the book.
The book addresses safeguarding concepts and theories, then applies the practice of safeguarding through a range of learning activities. The chapters provide specialist knowledge, present case studies, and support practitioners to develop safeguarding practice. When thinking about safeguarding practice, students often encounter two main challenges: translating policy into practice, and engaging within a meaningful multidisciplinary approach. Most serious case reviews and inquiries into tragic deaths or serious injuries have highlighted the need for better and closer cooperation between professionals and agencies, and the need for improved interprofessional communication and information sharing. With these in mind, the pedagogy of the book draws on activities to connect theory to practice across a range of contexts. Each chapter provides opportunities that guide the reader to engage in the text, then apply this knowledge to a given scenario. We anticipate this book being useful to a range of practitioners drawn from Health and Social Care but also extending beyond these disciplines. Clear signposting to professional codes of conduct and the provision of electronic links to professional websites support this approach. We wanted to ensure the book was accessible across a range of professions from across the UK. England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have discrete Acts, detailed in .
