    A Little Bit About My Journey

    T here is no way I could be here today typing this book without sharing a bit about my own journey with the Ketogenic diet and why I now pair it with an Intermittent Fasting lifestyle. My keto journey began on a whim, to be honest. I was basically at my wit's end, desperate to find a weight loss method I could stick to that worked. By then I was already thirty years old and had struggled with obesity for more than half my life. Morbid obesity, constant back pains, and arthritis had become my norm. It was definitely time for a drastic change.

    Of course, this was by no means the first time I had set out to lose weight. In fact, I had been trying to lose weight from I was about 16 years old back I was a sophomore in college. I was convinced at that age that I was just eating too much and that if I just stopped eating, I would have lost the weight.

    Boy, was I wrong!

    Sure, I got a whole size down by starving myself for a week pretending to eat and tossing the food when my roommate was not looking, but the success was short lived. I started feeling more, and more drained then before I knew it, I was lying in a hospital bed for low blood sugar. As the year went by, I become more attached to food, particularly sweets. By age 27 I was a whopping 380 pounds, and a size 26.

    This forced me into a constant state of depression, and of course, I turned to food.

    So once again I found myself searching for yet another diet plan. This time I opted for weight watchers. I tracked religiously, stuck to my points, and tried my best to avoid using any extra weekly points. I wanted to give it a fair chance without sabotaging it, so I tried not to weigh for the first two weeks. When I finally weighed, I was down 7 pounds, and I was elated! That elation was, however, very short lived as for some reason after that day I just could not lose any more pounds. I tweaked, spoke to the members on the forum but nothing worked, and after 3 months of trying I just lost interest.

    I continued going to the gym religiously and started searching once more for a diet program to help me out. I decided to just try restricting the number of calories I ate. So, for the next 2 weeks, I jotted down every single thing that I ate and drank so that I could keep my calorie intake below 1200 calories. I hired a personal trainer, and I was determined to drop those pesky pounds. Yet once again I only lost weight the first week, after that, I just kept gaining.

    That was it. I had had enough! I thought I had to accept the fact that I was just going to be obese for the rest of my life. I had started to believe that too until my personal trainer referred me to go see a nutritionist. That appointment literally changed my life! After listening to struggle I have with weight loss, and my typical day to day meals she told me something that I had never heard before. She said to me that losing weight is more than just a numbers game, it has more to do with what you consume vs. the number of calories that its worth.

    Those words resonated with me and my homework were to research low carb diets and to see if they would assist me. I didnt want to wait; I was sold. In my mind, this was it, my last shot. I was going to give it my all and prayed that it worked, but if it didnt, I would just accept that I was just meant to be obese. So, the very night I began my Ketogenic journey.

    As with all the other diets I tried I set out to give it a full 3 months before making an assumption on if it really worked or not. By my second month I had already hit ketosis and was down a whopping 15lbs. For me this was amazing as I was eating fat, wasnt depriving myself of the foods I loved. I did experience withdrawal symptoms from carbs for the first week, but I hung in there and those faded by the middle of week 3.

    Upon doing some research online I saw that there were people across the globe losing even more weight healthily by pairing the Keto diet with Intermittent fasting so of course I immediately consulted my nutritionist and with her go ahead I was off to a healthier more focused me.

    Again, I gave myself another 3 months to evaluate how it affected my body and believe me when I saw it took a lot of dedication. I started experiencing flu like symptoms that just would not go away, but the weight was still falling off, so I just kept on staying strong and pushing forward. The flu symptoms passed by about my 5th week on the mixed intermittent fasting & keto diet and by this time I was down by another 20lbs., so I decided it was time to introduce it to my family, and we have been on it ever since.
