Acknowledgments

The idea for this book came over a decade ago. I want to thank my many students who have participated in various assignments related to the contents of this book while studying in China and in the U.S. Their insights helped shape my thinking on many of the topics.

My content adviser, Michael Paul, did some of the background research, proofread and provided valuable insights for the many drafts, and contributed many of the personal anecdotes. He was always ready to bounce ideas around and discuss every topic addressed in the book. His practical and no-nonsense ideas were greatly appreciated.

My research assistant, Hongyi Jia, was invaluable in making sure that all the information in the book was current and accurate. Her network of family, relatives, and friends in China was essential to the research. She also assisted with the Chinese that appears throughout the book.

Finally, I thank my wonderful wife and kids for the support and stability they have constantly provided me for many years, especially during my absences while traveling in China.
