Acknowledgements
With the deepest appreciation I acknowledge the encouragement and assistance of the following people who read my manuscript in its early stages and made invaluable suggestionsmy son, Ron Dickerson, Jr., my daughter, Rashawn Dickerson, Dr. Jim Peterson, Greg Shiano, Mrs. Shar Marbury, every ball player that I ever coached, and to the many young, persistent high school coaches who have learned from my coaching style.
The project was born from the constant encouragement of my wife, Jeannie. I give her and all the others my boundless thanks.

Preface
For the more than three decades that I have been playing and coaching football at the collegiate level, I have coaching and observing defensive backs. Collectively, my experiences have given me an opportunity to evaluate many techniques and fundamentals for playing defensive back and a variety of methods for teaching those techniques and fundamentals. In the process, I have come to realize that true learning occurs when there is a need to know, a solid understanding of how to learn exists, and coaches and players realize that a particular goal can be reached.
I wrote this book to provide football coaches at all competitive levels with a tool that can enable them to maximize the skills and attributes of their players. As a vehicle for teaching and learning, properly designed drills can have extraordinary value. 1O1 Defensive Back Drills features drills that I have collected, field-tested, and applied over the course of my coaching career. If in the process of using the drills presented in this book, coaches are better able to develop the skills of the defensive backs, then the effort to write 101 Defensive Back Drills will have been well worthwhile.

Chapter 1
Warm-up Drills
Page 10
Drill #1: Move and React
Objective: To warm-up; to improve reaction time; to enhance stamina.
Equipment Needed: A football.
Description: The coach has the defensive backs spread out in several lines facing him. Each player is at least double-arms length from the closest player to him. With the ball in hand, the coach moves the ball one of four basic directions (left, right, forward and backward). The team responds to the movement of the ball and vigorously moves in the direction dictated by the coach. The coach also has the option of commanding the players to either run in place or to hit the ground by ordering them to "get on your face" or "get on your back". Both commands are quickly followed by an order to "get on your feet." The coach combines the directional movement commands with the various hit-the-ground commands to create a rigorous, non-stop warm-up session.
