If you travel, ski, snowmobile, snowshoe, or mountaineer in an area where there is plenty of slope and plenty of snow, then you are exposed to avalanche danger. In Avalanche Aware, veteran backcountry ski guide and avalanche forecaster John Moynier deftly guides you through the basics of how avalanches work, recognizing avalanche terrain, and testing the snow pack-before you venture onto unstable ground. Helpful black-and-white illustrations of proper gear, slope angle, snow pit tests, and the effects of wind and weather accompany his witty, informative explanations of how to avoid avalanche hazard. No book on avalanche safety would be complete without a description of search methods in the event of an unexpected slide, and Moyniers helpful explanations of how to go about finding a lost friend will give you extra confidence when you tackle the slopes. For truly enjoyable and successful winter expeditions, study Avalanche Aware before you head out and make it part of the safety gear you carry in the field.

This book is dedicated to Allan Bard, who passed
away in a guiding accident in July 1997. Bardini
was the epitome of a mountain guide; he was a
mentor, sage, leader, and, most of all, an
inspiration to all of us who love the backcountry,
especially in winter. He will be greatly missed.

I would also like to thank Allan Bard, David Beck, Peter Lev, Doug Robinson, Dan Whitmore, and Rick Wyatt for introducing me to the nuances of backcountry ski guiding and avalanche evaluation. Lastly, I would like to thank Steve Conger of the Avalanche Review, as well as Evelyn Lees, Tom Kimbrough, and Bruce Tremper of the USDAFS Avalanche Forecasting Center in Alta, Utah.

Preface
The dangerous lack of avalanche awareness by those who travel the mountains in winter often surprises me. Every year an average of about 30 people lose their lives in avalanche-related accidents that could have been easily avoided. Novices and an amazingly high percentage of expert skiers, snowboarders, mountaineers, and snowmobilers give little or no thought to the stability of the snow-pack before committing to a slope, even though their lives depend on it. These folks play a dangerous game of "avalanche roulette" without even knowing how many chambers are loaded.
It is not my intent to scare people away from visiting the mountains in winter. On the contrary, by increasing awareness and understanding of avalanches, more people can safely enjoy a lifetime of winter fun in the mountains. In this book, I have provided a practical approach to understanding avalanche danger.
Page 7
Beyond this book, I encourage you to learn more about avalanches and the conditions that affect snowpack stability. The best way to do this is to take an avalanche course taught in the field by an avalanche professional.
Page 8
Introduction
Most people who travel in the mountains in winter, no matter where they live, are exposed to avalanche danger. All it takes is snow, slope, and a trigger to make a slide. The trick is to recognize whether or not conditions are stable enough to allow safe travel.
