Foreword by Professor Jennie Brand-Miller In Reversing Diabetes , Dr Alan Barclay takes the latest science and translates it into an accessible and practical guide. It provides the best, most accurate and up-to-date information on what you need to eat and do to successfully manage your diabetes or even put it into remission and if you have pre-diabetes, to turn back the clock. Diabetes is a very complex condition and what works well for one person may not work for another. Thats one reason why so many people with diabetes find that despite doing all the right things, their blood glucose levels fluctuate excessively and/or remain too high. The 70 recipes in this book provide options for people who choose to follow either lower carbohydrate or higher carbohydrate diets to manage their blood glucose levels.

They come with a full nutritional analysis plus an estimated glycaemic index and glycaemic load value. Importantly, they are all suitable for people using a variety of different carbohydrate counting techniques to manage their diabetes including grams, exchanges or portions. I am particularly delighted to write a foreword for this book, as its publication coincides with the twentieth anniversary of the publication of The GI Factor (now the Low GI Diet Handbook ), which my colleagues and I wrote. We wanted to share the then ground-breaking findings that showed how simply swapping healthy low-GI foods and drinks for regular high-GI varieties within the same food group or category made an enormous difference to the diet and lifestyle of people with diabetes, giving some, in our experience, a new lease of life. Clinical trials have now clearly shown that using this GI approach, you can decrease your HbA1c by an average of 0.5 percentage points above and beyond what you would achieve by following a healthy diet alone. In addition, it may also decrease your risk of having a hypo (if you use insulin or other insulin-raising medications).

I recommend Reversing Diabetes with its practical information and delicious recipes that the whole family will enjoy as well as anyone with diabetes or pre-diabetes. Its also worth keeping in mind that a diet thats good for people with diabetes is a diet thats good for everybody. Professor Jennie Brand-Miller, PhD, AM Author of the Low GI Diet series and Professor of Human Nutrition,
Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney, Australia Foreword by Professor Peter Colman Diabetes, which affects at least 1.1 million Australians and costs the country $14 billion annually, provides major challenges for people living with the condition, their families, caring health professionals, the community and politicians. These challenges include reducing the prevalence of diabetes, detecting diabetes earlier in those at risk and reducing the complications that can occur if diabetes is not controlled optimally. Lifestyle approaches, in particular those addressing nutrition and physical exercise, are the common foundations in tackling the diabetes epidemic. Reversing Diabetes will become a major resource in assisting people with diabetes or at high risk of developing diabetes.

Alan Barclays extremely broad experience in dietetics and diabetes science, research and clinical care place him in a unique position to put all the pieces together for people trying to understand the way forward for their diabetes management. There is up-to-date information on the causes of diabetes, the complications and most importantly the treatments and approaches to the prevention of diabetes. This is a rapidly developing field and the book captures the most recent developments. Of course, nutrition is key to all these domains and this is the area in which the book makes its biggest contribution. There is detailed and extremely thorough information guiding people through the many food choices available to them, allowing detailed analysis of the food groups for those requiring this level of detail. Sample meal plans are an added bonus for people wanting extra guidance.

Im sure all diabetes health professionals will welcome Dr Barclays excellent work and have no hesitation in recommending it as an essential reference for people with diabetes and their families. Professor Peter Colman Director, Department of Diabetes and Endocrinology, Royal Melbourne Hospital Preface Diabetes has become a global pandemic. Consequently, preventing and even curing diabetes has become a major priority for governments and researchers alike. Each year, billions of dollars are spent around the globe on scientific research. Much of this research is published in journals or presented at conferences, and its up to those working in the area of diabetes management and prevention to sift through the ever-expanding body of evidence to make sense of it all, to help guide future research and to advise people with existing diabetes and those at risk about the best way to prevent and manage the condition. Regardless of what type of diabetes you have, chances are you have been advised that diabetes is a lifelong condition and that there is no cure.

However, there is increasing evidence that you can at the very least delay the development of type 2 diabetes. Even if you do end up developing type 2 diabetes, if you treat it aggressively soon after you are diagnosed, you may be able to put it into remission using a variety of medical and non-medical treatments. This is why we named this book Reversing Diabetes to inspire you to explore these opportunities and see if you can indeed put your diabetes into remission. If you have type 1 diabetes, there is no convincing evidence at this point that you can reverse the condition through changes to your lifestyle, but you can delay or even prevent the development of the common complications of diabetes, and one of the simple ways you can do this is to ensure that you enjoy a healthy lifestyle that includes, of course, foods and drinks. Drawing on over 20 years of clinical experience as an Accredited Practising Dietitian, including nearly 16 years at Diabetes Australia, I have combined the most recent and highest-quality evidence about the nutritional management and prevention of diabetes into one easy-to-read book that is jam-packed with practical everyday advice and 70 delicious recipes. It will help you put the latest science into practice so that you can enjoy your food, while looking after your health as best as scientifically possible.
