Technical assistance was given by Tom Wright, who patiently waded through this project and learned lots in the process. Thanks again.
A book is so much more fun when it has illustrations, and we have Marilyn Wright to thank for her original drawings of Willy the Worm, who winds his way through our book.

Introduction
The world of children's literature is an exciting place with outstanding works published in the past and hundreds of marvelous new books being produced every year. The quality of writing and illustrating continues to change and improve, making the creation of children's literature a true art form. With so many high-quality books from which to choose, book selection by librarians, teachers, parents, and students may become difficult. The goal of this book is to guide the user in book selection for recreational reading and in connection with all curriculum areas. I have chosen both newly published and older, "tried and true" titles on the basis of their quality of writing, how well the illustrations accompany the text, the interest to students, availability, and a strong curriculum connection.
Many of the books included in this collection are multifaceted, allowing them to fit into more than one category or curriculum. The annotation is included in the section considered most appropriate for each book, but if it fits into another category, a brief summary is included in that additional category, along with a note at the end referencing the section that includes the annotation. A table at the back of this book, arranged alphabetically by title, indicates the curriculum connections for each book.
