Preface
The topic of this book is important. Millions of patients throughout the world are given fluids, electrolytes and volume expanders every day. The choice of fluids is also huge. Their prescription is usually left to relatively junior doctors who often find the choice of fluid confusing, the electrolyte composition baffling and the amount they should give unclear. Many of the textbooks on the subject describe the physiology extremely well, but few will help the junior doctor solve a problem. This book willwe hope! It has been written by senior consultants, experts in their field, who not only know the theory, but also and perhaps more importantly deal with these problems everyday. In addition, each of them trains junior doctors and so is aware of the problems they have.
To help trainees understand the problems with their topic we have asked each contributor to write in a didactic manner, using tables, diagrams, key points and bulleted lists to make their chapter easy to understand. The theory is there as well, but usually clearly separated to allow it to be read with the clinical part or delayed as the reader wishes. The first chapter deals with fundamental theory. This can be read later if wished. However, parts of the subsequent chapters may be less to understand if this course is taken.
This is not meant to be a comprehensive book on the topicrather a practicable day to day guide. For example we have not included anything on the treatment of patients in renal failure. Readers of this book should obtain expert help in this other problems not covered, rather than "dabble". Similarly, each chapter has a list of suggested further reading.
