Virtually everyone with the Archives Division of the National Air and Space Museum has assisted with this project; Dana Bell, Kristine Kaske-Martin, Patti Williams, Kate Igoe, Mark Taylor, David Schwartz, Larry Wilson, Paul Silbermann, Mark Kahn, Melissa Keiser, Barbara Weitbrecht and Jessamyn Lloyd. My immediate supervisor Dan Hagedorn (now at the Museum of Flight in Seattle) was extremely supportive of this project and lent advice, support and information when he could, not to mention constant shots of morale boost when he saw my energies flag. Also thank you to Marilyn Graskowiak, the Chair of the NASM Archives Division. Thanks also to the staff of the Department of Space History, especially Frank Winter, and the staff of the Aeronautics Department, especially Bob van der Linden, Roger Connor and Russ Lee. Thank you to the staff of the NASM Branch of the SI Libraries, especially Phil Edwards and Leah Smith. Trish Graboske as our Director of Publications did a wonderful job of displaying patience with me as I tried to give birth to my first book.

Outside of the Museum, I was offered assistance by Peter Alway, Jim Banke, John Bolthouse and Alan Renga of the San Diego Aerospace Museum, Alan D. Fischer and Sara Hammond of Raytheon, John Getsy, Dr. Joe Handelman, Dr. Richard Hallion, Jennings Heilig, Patrick McCarthy, Richard Maltz, Peter W. Rusnak of the Air Force Research Lab History Office, Nancy Rustemeyer, Brandon Silverstein of L-3 BAi, and Matt Steele of ATK, formerly with Orbital Sciences and Steve Zaloga (both a special thanks).

Id also like to thank the corporations and corporate and military photographers for taking and providing images for this publication, in some cases to Herb Desind, in other cases directly to the Museum to support this publication and other Museum efforts.

I must thank Lionel Leventhal for asking me if I had any ideas during one of his visits to Washington, and his immediately turning to Trish Graboske to approve this. Michael Leventhal took the book along to Frontline Books and has also been a keen supporter of this project, and provided insight and patience. A very special thanks to Deborah Hercun and my editors for massaging and editing this into a quality publication.

Finally a thank you to my parents John and Olean and my four brothers; Jeffery, Martin, Stephen and John, who support me for reasons only they know and understand.
