PREFACE
Colorado has had an exciting and colorful past. Dinosaurs, Cliff Dwellers, Indians, explorers, trappers, traders, miners, cowboys and settlers have all been part of its story. Even the formation of the land has been fascinating. Tales, Trails and Tommyknockers does not attempt to touch upon every significant event that took place in the state. It merely introduces children to some of the romantic lore and legend which have uniquely distinguished Colorado. The stories in the book have been selected more for dramatic narrative appeal than historical significance. However, history has been treated accurately wherever introduced.
It is the author's hope that Tales, Trails and Tommyknockers will motivate its young readers and their families to explore more of their exciting and unusual state.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Writing Tales, Trails and Tommyknockers has been a richly rewarding experience. I would like to acknowledge several people whose expertise and encouragement have helped make this book a reality: Louisa Ward Arps, noted Colorado historian, for helpful suggestions on research; Kenneth Carpenter, paleontology student at the University of Colorado, for the chapter on dinosaurs; Bob Rothe, local railroad buff, for the chapters on Otto Mears and the Moffat Road; the State Historical Society of Colorado and the Western History Department of the Denver Public Library for illustrations; Joyce Hart and Kitty Leonard, Boulder Valley teachers, for trying out the book in their third grade classes, prior to publication. I am especially grateful to Jerome Brondfield, juvenile author and editor, for critically evaluating the manuscript and encouraging me to publish. The moral support of all these helpful friends has been greatly appreciated. But I am particularly indebted to two people: Gene Coulter, whose sensitive and spirited illustrations bring the book alive, and Barbara Mussil, my publisher.
