Preface
When Colorado's War on Militant Unionism was first published in 1972, it was then among a very few works that addressed the theme of labor-management relations in the American West. With a few exceptions, historians of the region generally had avoided the subject. Their indifference did not result from a lack of labor subjects to investigate, for such opportunities abounded. Their attachment and commitment to traditional themes then identified as western were probably the causes of this neglect. That such was the case became clear during the late seventies and eighties when books concerning labor and other less conventional themes began to be published on a regular basis. These works paralleled the advent during those two decades of the "new labor history," the "new social history," and now the ''new western history." They revealed a far more complicated West, one with much greater diversity than that perceived by its earlier chroniclers. Therefore, the likelihood is strong that the steady stream of studies exploring the role of labor, women, minorities, the environment, and other themes emerging in the twentieth-century West will continue.
