When we started Lighthammer Software Development in 1998, we had no idea that the vision we held for ubiquitous access to manufacturing information would quickly transform itself into an entirely new market for enterprise manufacturing intelligence software. The original concept for the product was code named Morning Coffee this quite vividly describes the intent of the software which was to enable manufacturing personnel to have access to a breadth of operational information each morning to prepare themselves for their daily production meetings. Having spent some time as a supervisor in a steel mill, I knew the importance and value of up-to-date knowledge, and after a few years in the software and integration industry, knew the challenge and complexity of obtaining that information. The products are an evolution of that original vision, since expanded to include not only visualization and analytics, but also the integration of manufacturing systems with each other and with the rest of the enterprise.
What I find most fulfilling of all is the incredible community of customers, implementers, developers, and experts that have formed around what is now known as SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence (MII), and the value that has been created for this community as a result of the many innovative and successful applications of the technology around the world. As this ecosystem grows, the opportunity to expanded value creation grows with it. In our networked and connected world, the importance of sharing knowledge and best practices becomes a key link in unlocking the potential within the participants businesses.
This book represents the hard work of two of the ecosystems leading experts, Abesh Bhattacharjee and Dipankar Saha, to bring their wealth of knowledge and experience in implementing SAP MII to the broader community. On behalf of the entire MII community, I thank them for their initiative and effort in making this book a reality.
In hindsight, we should probably have named the product SAP MIII with the additional I referring to innovation. Software should not be the end solution itself it should be an enabler that provides creative people with the ability to quickly deploy innovative business processes and ideas, particularly those that provide long term competitive advantages. It is in this spirit that I encourage you all to leverage the wealth of knowledge and experience presented in this book and to go forward and create!
Best regards,

Not quite long ago SAP announced their planned acquisition of erstwhile Lighthammer Software Development. Their product Lighthammer has evolved over the years to what we now know as SAP Manufacturing Integration and Intelligence. This was applauded all around by industry veterans and analysts worldwide with headlines such as SAP discovers the Plant Floor. However, this was in line with SAPs Adaptive Manufacturing concept which envisions a manufacturing process that is capable of sensing and proactively responding to exceptions through the efficient use of available resources. It is here where SAP MII steps in to provide near real time shop-floor visibility to the enterprise and the availability of actionable intelligence.
From there SAP MII has come a long way. We have successfully delivered SAP MII 12.0 to the customers and SAP MII 12.1 is in ramp-up. Over the days, MII has only become better, providing better connectivity and visibility to the shop-floor and enhancing functionality to model applications that enable the end-user to better visualize the data and also take action in real time in response to unpredictable changes on the shop-floor. And all of this is done through a model driven development workbench that requires minimal coding.
This book couldnt have come at a better time, given that SAP MII is close to achieving maturity as a product. This is the first ever book on SAP MII and both Dipankar and Abesh have done an excellent job in presenting the various nuances of the product to the reader through ample examples and business scenario discussions. Both of the authors are very competent, having written a multitude of very well received SAP MII related blogs and articles on the SAP Community Network. The fact that they are also SAP Mentors only serves to reinforce the fact that they are amongst the leading experts in this field.
To get most out of SAP MII, use this book to find out how you can connect to the manufacturing shop-floor easily and provide rich data visualization for the end-users. Combine this knowledge of SAP MII with your creative zeal and passion for innovation to create the ultimate value for your organization or your customers.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to the following people:
Our families without whose help and constant support this endeavor would have been just a dream.
Haimanti Bhattacharjee, wife of Abesh and a Technical Writer by profession, whose constant attention to details and zeal for perfection has made the book much more readable and presentable than the rough cut we produced.
Rick Bullotta, co-founder and CTO of former Lighthammer Software, ex-Vice President at SAP Research and SAP Labs LLC, and the chief architect of Lighthammer CMS that has evolved into SAP MII today, who, other than extending his helping hand at every step, has also reviewed this book for technical details ironing out whatever slips we might have made authoring it.
Parthasarathi Roy Chowdhury, Francis Simon, Salvatore Castro, Bob DeRemer, Jeremy Good, Thomas Mark Schuette, Pradip Ray and Sreelakshmi Chinnaraj of SAP; Rajesh Ray, Som Sarkar, Soumen Mondal of IBM and Manoel Franklin F. da Costa of Neoris; who have enriched the content at every step. Being our friends and colleagues, they did not for a moment hesitate to constructively criticize the contents when required while also helping us with facts, figures and other technical suggestions to ensure a much more fulfilling experience to the reader.
Ramakrishna Yarlapati, Vijay Seethapathy, Thilo Sieth, Mayank Bhatnagar of SAP and Anup K Ghosh, Asidhara Lahiri, Nilay Ghosh of IBM without whose encouragement and support the process of writing this book would not have been as smooth as it was.
SAP PRESS for believing in us and in our abilities to write a book on SAP MII, especially Jon Franke and Meg Dunkerley, editors of our book, whose constant help and watchful guidance at every step have ensured that our work is at par with the best in the industry.
