ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Five years ago, when the first edition of this book was released, a few risk takers adopted it. It has been gratifying that the number of adoptions has increased each year since then. I have received much constructive feedback from colleagues and their students about how to improve the book and many of these suggestions have been incorporated into this edition. During Spring semester 1994, the number of requests for the book exceeded the number of books available and some loyal customers could not get books for their classes. Sagamore Publishing and I apologize for this and hope it will not happen again but the demand for the text simply exceeded our most optimistic projections.
The profession and its knowledge base has advanced considerably during the past five years and I have tried to incorporate the latest knowledge about experiencing leisure and managing program services into this second edition. As stated in the first edition, experiencing and participating in leisure is a complex interaction form. Facilitating these experiences through designed recreation programs is equally complex. I remain a student of the subject and am grateful to the many practitioners, students, and colleagues who, over the years, have helped me better understand leisure, recreation, and programming.
I am especially grateful to the following colleagues who have given me feedback about the book that has been useful to me in preparing the second edition.
