First, I thank my wife Doris. I also thank our daughter, Judy Covington, and her boss, Ken Wright, for their early assistance. Ken is instructional supervisor of the Scott County (KY) Schools. Sagamore wanted the book on Macintosh disks. IBM-PC is my bag. Judy and Ken solved that problem. They provided a Mac LC; then a LaserWriter Select printer. It is important to have such people in your corner.
Thanks to Ira and Judy Gewirtzman. Ira is a UK sports guru. He keeps us informed on the home front while we winter in Florida. John (Pistol) and Jean Woodard are our Florida neighbors. "Pistol" is from Harrodsburg, KY. We go back a long way. Start with the Marine Corps on Guadalcanal (W.W. II) and then at UK, where he was one of Bear Bryant's sweat hogs. He has been a supportive friend.
We owe much to Cliff and Meredith Barker. The fact that Cliff was a member of the "Fabulous Five" has little to do with our friendship. Their Florida home is on Dunnes Creek near Palatka. It is a retreat. While fishing, we do not discuss basketball or Rupp. At dinner, we do not talk UK. Breakfast is a time to share Meredith's crossword puzzles.
I appreciate the Rupp family's trust and willingness to let me do things my way. Their concern is the racist image placed on the patriarch by persons who did not know him or live in his time. Perhaps I know the answers, but questions linger: Why doesn't someone blame those members of the black community who did not step forward to help him recruit their "boys?" Why didn't they encourage those boys to challenge the system? Better yet, why doesn't someone criticize Paul "Bear" Bryant for not being the first to break the color barrier? I interviewed Bryant a few years before his death, but I did not ask that question. What was the use? We talked about UK and Rupp.
Thanks to S. T. Roachas a sports editor, I worked his Dunbar High School gamesfor sharing his views on the racial situation. I was not aware of an embarrassment he

suffered at a UK basketball game. Neither was Rupp. Coach Roach did not contest the situation because his job was at stake. Perhaps Rupp faced a similar fate in the racist Southeastern Conference. Hopefully, I have provided some insight into those changing times. There is blame to share, both black and white, not placed on one person. For those who wanted to talk off the record, thanks, but no thanks.
