Correctionville, Iowa: An Introduction
Michael Martone
Pelisipia, Polypotania, Saratoga, Illinoia, Assenispia, Michigania, Cherronesus, Metropotania, Sylvania.... Thomas Jefferson drew up a list of names for the new states northwest of the Ohio River. Since 1776, Congress had been promising land to the soldiers who fought the War of Independence and had considered the sale of land in the new region as a way to raise money for the war. Now with the war over and the land being purchased from the tribes and ceded by the states with claims, Congress appointed two committees, one to plan for the governments of the new territory, the other charged with locating them and drawing up methods of their disposal. Thomas Jefferson sat on both committees.
