On March 6, 1945, after hearing rumors that his son, John, was writing a book about their stormy past, Frank Lloyd Wright wrote a note asking him, What is this talk of a book? Of all that I dont need and dread is more exploitation. Cant you drop it?John assured his father that he would like the book and sent him a copy on its publicationMarch 29, 1946. A few days later, Frank Lloyd Wright returned it with numerous comments penciled in the margin, responding to what his son had written, and with a request that a new, second copy be sent to him. John complied with the request but first transcribed not only all his fathers comments into the clean copy in black pencil but also his own answers to them in red pencil. He also transcribed all these comments into a third copy, again using colors to differentiate his comments from those of his father. This third copy is the basis for this new edition of John Lloyd Wrights book. The main text of this volume is a reprint of the 1946 edition along with marginal notes, comments, and corrections made by John Lloyd Wright and his father, as well as explanatory notes and an introduction by Narciso G. Menocal. In the postscript, Elizabeth Wright Ingraham, John Lloyd Wrights daughter, remembering her grandfather and father, says that in this edition what was a sons book becomes a father and son book.

Foreword
SOMETIME DURING THE 1960s John Lloyd Wright approached Avery Library with a list of books and documents in his possession that he was offering for possible sale. Among these only one of the three copies of My Father Who Is on Earth that are here published was listed. This was the one returned by "Dad" on 2 April 1946, with marginal comments in his own hand. Adolf K. Placzek, then Avery Librarian, visited John and his wife Frances in their splendid home in Del Mar, California, and they took an instant liking to each other. The correspondence files in Avery attest to a lasting and warm friendship. There are letters about visits and about various purchases of those things Avery needed and could afford to buy, interspersed with records of generous donations of other items John Lloyd Wright decided to part with.
During 1971 they discussed the possibility of having Columbia University Press publish a facsimile of the annotated copy of My Father Who Is on Earth, but nothing seems to have come of it. Upon John's death in 1972, after a heartfelt letter of condolence, Placzek suggested to Wright's widow, Frances, that it might be appropriate for her to donate the document to Avery, but apparently she too was reluctant. It is in a letter she wrote to Dolf Placzek, dated 27 December 1973, that she first mentions the existence of another copy, in which, she says "John replied in each page to everything Father Wright wrote in his copy."
