INTRODUCTION
Checking All Systems
Fanatic! Thank you for getting this book. I wanted to take this space to tell you about how it came to be. You might remember Fanatic! volumes 1-3, which were published between 2004 and 2007. I had a radio show at a station called Indie 103.1. I was there from 2004 to early 2009 when they signed off.
I made extensive notes for each show and annotated each song. I thought that they might be useful for people who were curious about music and they were really fun to write. The Fanatic! books were comprised of these notes.
When Indie closed its doors I felt bad for the station and that all the people who had put so much into making it great were suddenly out of a job. Selfishly, I felt bad for myself as I really dug having a radio show. Playing music for people is something Ive always liked. Having this as an actual job was incredible. Whenever Id get a letter from someone who said they appreciated the show, it made my day. The idea that someone would take the time to check out the broadcast and actually liked it was the best thing. I started missing my radio show as soon as it was over.
A few days after Indie was history, I was rescued by Jason Bentley at 89.9 FM KCRW. He wrote and asked if I wanted a show at the station. Scarcely able to believe my good fortune, I replied immediately in the affirmative. By April of 2009, I was gainfully employed there and at the time of this writing, still am. I never know when Ill be terminated but so far, Engineer X (my long standing sonic ally who I started with at Indie) and I seem to be in good standing with the bosses and havent been called into the office for a talk. I like being on KCRW. Its where I learned how to do a radio show from the great Deirdre ODonoghue, on her show SNAP, in the 1980s. Whenever Im live at KCRW, I sit pretty much where I did when I was learning from her. You couldnt imagine a better person to learn how to do a radio show from. If you have ever heard our show and liked it, the good parts are what I learned from Deirdre. Ill tell you more about her some time.
Since I was back in harness, I wondered if I should keep up the writing like I had been doing at Indie. There was no way I wouldnt do some kind of pre-show notes but I thought they should be different. Here are the notes from the first show I did on KCRW:

BROADCAST #001
AIR DATE: 03-07-09
Fanatic! This is the first broadcast from our new location, 89.9 FM KCRW. Im surprised that we made such a smooth transition, last week we were at Indie, and this week were here.
For those of you who have been listening to our show for weeks, months, years, thanks for making the move down the dial to re-join us. Hopefully, youll find tonights show another dose for what ails you and again, thanks for staying with us.
For you loyal KCRW listeners, hello! To give you a brief overview of this show, here are some fast facts: I was at Indie 103 from 2004 until last week. The show was called Harmony In My Head, named after the great Buzzcocks song. For me, the name pertains to the very spirit of this show. If you listen, youll find that we bounce all over the record store. We jump from decade to continent to genre because theres great music from all over since playback was invented. So, get ready to careen wildly every Saturday evening from 1800 to 2000 hrs. right here.
Just so you know, I work on these play lists for several days, sometimes for weeks in advance, moving things around, adding new music, so that every Saturday night, well get the best out of our time together! Since I have only two hours a week with you, I try to make them matter. I have a rule for myself: I do my best to buy at least one record every day. So, theres always a steady flow of music coming in. Usually, by Friday afternoon before the broadcast, I have it all done and post the tracks well get to and anything else I think is pertinent on my site. Hopefully, they get you interested and waiting for the show with breathless anticipation!
The bottom line is that I want you to have a great time listening. We all have complicated burdens and obligations, so, for at least this 120 minutes, we get to check out all kinds of music and kick the weekend into high gear.
I honestly dont know how this show fits in with what else is happening at KCRW and not to sound like a total jerk, Im not trying to fit in as much as Im trying to do two hours of music a week the way I want to. I dont know how else to do it. Hopefully, that good intent will make for a show that holds your interest. Ive always figured that listeners are just like meeasily bored, exceedingly impatient and most of all, extremely curious. SO, we are going to go. We are going to go fast and far and deep every week. If what were trying to do with our little show isnt to your liking, fair enough! Perhaps youll give it a chance to grow on you before you tune out.
All the way at the bottom of the page are all the songs well play tonight. I always bring extra music in case we need it. A couple of things to point out. The Grinderman track is from the Palermo Shooting soundtrack. Its one of two Grinderman tunes included, both exclusive to the soundtrack. What a score! I had to get this because there was no way we were not going to listen to obscure Nick Cave music. Fanatic, this is what its all about!
I hope you enjoy the show. Weve only just begun! Next week is going to be a great one. Ive got Slim Harpo, Deerhoof, The Sonics, Gyrgy Ligeti, Public Enemy and much more all lined up and ready to rock. Until next week, STAY FANATIC!!! Henry
