Provides an engaging and illuminating view of the culture of the South and the study of natural history. . . . Ravenels achievements, Haygood argues, refute Clement Eatons contention that slavery stifled creative thought; they also modify the more extravagant claim for southern equality with northern science made in Thomas Cary Johnsons Scientific Interests in the Old South (1936). American Historical ReviewConvincingly argues for the importance of these middle years to understanding American science and vividly illustrates the effect of the Civil War on science. . . . Ravenel, a geographically isolated planter with a college degree but no scientific training, managed to serve as one of Americas leading mycologists, despite continual financial and medical problems and the disruption of the Civil War. This lively account of his life and work is at once inspiring and tragic. Journal of the History of BiologyA thoroughly enjoyable biography of one of the important American naturalists, botanists, and mycologists of the 1800s. . . . Truly an outstanding contribution to the history of American science. Brittonia

Acknowledgments
During the course of work on Henry Ravenel, it has been my pleasure to meet many kind people who paved my road with their knowledge and enthusiasm. I am glad to have this chance to thank them for their help. Personnel at all the archives I consulted were, without exception, patient and encouraging and often went to much trouble on my account. I should mention in particular Allen Stokes of the South Caroliniana Library, Donald Pfister of the Farlow Herbarium, and Betsy Shaw of the Gray Herbarium. In addition, staff at the Academy of Science of Philadelphia and the Hunt Institute in Pittsburgh took time to look for Ravenel material in their collections. The Herbarium and the Humanities Research Center at the University of Texas in Austin on several occasions provided access to some of the rarer published works. Larry Davenport of the Mohr Herbarium at the University of Alabama helped me with Ravenel's Alabama correspondent Thomas Minott Peters, as did Alexander Sartwell of the Alabama Geological Survey. Among librarians, special mention must be made of Fondren Library's Ferne Hyman, Kay Flowers, and Janet Pollens.
