Foreword
When Jeffrey (he is the ghost-in-residence at the Windham household in Selma, Alabama) began clumping up and down the hall, slamming doors, moving furniture, scaring the cat, and rocking in an antique chair, we never imagined that his presence would lead to our introduction to some of the South's most splendid ghosts.
Technically, we never actually met any of Jeffrey's Southern friends of the spirit world, but our interest in Jeffrey (there is absolutely nothing like having a ghost in your own house to arouse interest in the supernatural!) has led us into the fascinating field of ghoulish genealogy.
Having a ghostand admitting it openlysomehow encourages other people to share similar experiences, to retell some of their own tales of the supernatural. And so our collection of ghost stories grew; our acquaintances among Southern ghosts widened.
No one, not even those returning revenants who appear century after century and thus presumably keep in close touch with developments in the spirit world, could ever know all the ghosts who haunt this land, this South, for an amazing array of spirits dwell here.
There is something about the South that encourages, perhaps even requires, the presence of ghosts and the measured retelling of their deeds. And, somehow, these stories provide a nostalgic link with the past, with generations who were here before.
It was, as we said, because of our association with Jeffrey that we became interested in the ghosts whose stories are recorded here. Each of these stories is representative of

similar tales told throughout the South to the gentle rhythm of chairs rocking on a wide porch or recounted around an open log fire on a stormy night.
These tales are told not to frighten or even to raise troubling questions. They are told to help preserve some of the South's heritage of great stories. If a reader should become frightened or uneasy so that sleep does not come easily, there is a simple precaution he can take to ward off evil or unwanted visitations:
PLACE YOUR SHOES ON THE FLOOR AT THE EDGE OF THE BED WITH ONE TOE POINTING UNDER THE BED AND THE OTHER TOE POINTING IN THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION.
With shoes placed in that position, nothing bad will ever happen. Jeffrey guarantees it!
And now here are some of Jeffrey's cohorts, some Southern ghosts he would like for readers to meet.
