Jeffrey is the mischievous something that has headquarters in the Windham home in Selma. He first made his presence known in October 1966, and since then he has continued, at irregular and infrequent intervals, to clump down the hall, slam doors, rock in a chair, frighten the family cat (now deceasedthrough no fault of Jeffrey), move heavy pieces of furniture, cause electronic equipment to malfunction, and hide objects. He frequently accompanies Mrs. Windham on her travels, and tales of Jeffreys antics are widely recounted. Nobody has ever been afraid of Jeffrey, Mrs. Windham says. He is very convenient to havewe blame everything that goes awry on him. His only purpose for existing (if that word is proper) is to prod me into collecting and preserving true ghost stories from throughout the South.

Foreword
Jeffrey is the ghost who lives in the Windham home in Selma, Alabama.
He is a friendly poltergeist who clumps around the house, frightens the cat (an aged feline known as Hornblower), and delights in creating confusion. His pranks are mischievous rather than wicked, and his antics provide the Windhams and their friends with unusual and rather spirited pleasure.
Jeffrey's presence in her home stirred Kathryn Windham's latent interest in the subject of ghosts, and she began a collection of authentic ghost stories from throughout the South.
In collaboration with Margaret Gillis Figh, folklore authority on the Huntingdon College (Montgomery, Alabama) faculty, she wrote 13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey. This book was followed by Jeffrey Introduces 13 More Southern Ghosts, a sampling of strange tales from seven southern states.
Now, still prodded by Jeffrey, Kathryn Windham has selected thirteen of Georgia's grandest ghosts for inclusion in this latest volume of true tales of the supernatural.

Preface
Kathryn Windham is a professional compiler of ghost stories, and in 13 Georgia Ghosts And Jeffrey she has drawn from the best of Georgia's wealth of ghostlore. Most of these specters are famous, known throughout the South; a few are familiar only in their own locality. All of them have an authentic historical background.
Ghost stories have a very real place in the folklore and the history of a state or a nation. After all, who should be better able to tell of happenings long past than the ghosts of those who had a part in them?
Kathryn Windham (with the aid of Jeffrey) has a talent for making ghost stories interesting to all ages-from third graders to doctors of philosophy-and making history come alive in the process. Her talent was never better than in 13 Georgia Ghosts And Jeffrey.
