Foreword
F. Lee Bailey
I don't pretend to be an expert on the juvenile court. Contending with the perversities and uncertainties of the adult court provides enough trouble for me. I have often thought that, if I were to come back in another life, I might like to be a juvenile court Judge. True, defense lawyers thrive on the exciting contest to save an innocent man; yet, there's a certain purity about the juvenile court, a challenge in meeting the unknown that is appealing. It reminds me of the days when I was a young Marine pilot flying Sabre jets. Even though my senses warned me that the sky was full of surprises and peril, I was still in control. There was a coolness up there, a feeling that the world belonged to me. Judging in juvenile court must be like that, a feeling that you can still change a young person's life. Point him in the right direction; see the metamorphosis from a vile little wretch to a decent young person; realize that at any moment Humpty Dumpty can come tumbling down.
Those who know judges personally will tell you that their darkest moments come when duty requires them to punish another human being: the worst is execution, the second worst is prison, and the third worst is some lesser alternative. All of our breeding, education, and adult sense is liberty-oriented. To impinge upon that liberty is at least unpleasant, and at worst abhorrent, to any thinking, caring, sensitive judge. In my long experience, the vast majority of such judges are all of the above.
