Peter's Wish
It was the night before the spelling test. Peter Cooper was in bed. Before he fell asleep he made a wish.
Please let me get sick before morning!
Peter was worried about the test. His mother had helped him study the words. After supper they went over them again and again. They had plenty of time. Mr. Cooper was away on a sales trip. Peter's two-year-old sister, Betsy, was in bed.
At bedtime his mother said, "You know them, Peter." She looked pleased. Surprised, too. He knew what she was thinking.
You can learn things at home. Why can't you learn them in school?
She gave him a hug. He frowned and bit at a fingernail.
