The inspiration forRescuedwas the tragic situation with pets during the Katrina disaster thousands refusing to leave without their pets, and many animals dying due to official indifference to these disposable creatures. Extensively trained in animal rescues, Allen and Linda Anderson interviewed hundreds of volunteers, hurricane survivors, and government officials for this book.Rescuedoffers both hope and practical suggestions, as well as the latest information on official policy and how to help in future catastrophes. It goes beyond the recent tragedies to talk about the various rescue and sanctuary operations, what volunteers and staff do, and how to help. Using a dramatic structure and photos, the book presents the before, during, and after journeys of people separated from their animals.Rescuedputs attention on an unheralded world of animal shelters, organizations, and brave individuals who made a difference during the largest animal disaster in American history.

Praise for Rescued

Rescued is a riveting book about amazing people who truly make a huge difference to countless animals with whom we share our homes and our planet. Its personal stories about unsung and selfless heroes who work behind the scenes clearly illustrate the deep passions that bind us to a wide variety of animals.

Marc Bekoff, professor of biology at the University of Colorado,
author of Animal Passions and Beastly Virtues,
and editor of the Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior

Through firsthand accounts of the sweeping tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, this indispensable primer on disaster response and support networks melts away the notion that a cat or dog is anything less than a family member.

Jonathan Balcombe, author of
Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good

Hurricane Katrina taught us that public policy must be revised to reflect the love between people and their nonhuman family members. Rescued is a finely written, touching, and important book that will warm the hearts of all readers whose animals are an indispensable part of the family.

Karen Dawn, founder of the animal advocacy media watch
DawnWatch.com

The Andersons have placed animals center stage and taught us their value. This must-read, riveting account helps us understand that Hurricane Katrina caused the evolution of both the human and animal spirit.

Barbara J. Gislason, chair,
American Bar Association TIPS Animal Law Committee

Rescued is a wonderful tribute to all the individuals, organizations, and government entities that give their all to save and protect animals every single day. It should be required reading for anyone considering entering the world of animal welfare or animal rescue.

Susana Della Maddalena, executive director, PetSmart Charities

H urricane Katrina was one of the worst human tragedies in American history and brought unforgettable images of destruction and despair. Once the people whose homes and lives had been ravaged began to cope with the storms immediate aftermath, another crisis emerged: the plight of the tens of thousands of pets who were left to fend for themselves and the desperate owners who returned, at great risk to themselves, to search for them. It is important to tell their stories so we can learn from both the successes and disappointments of that unforgettable ordeal.

John Ensign, DVM
United States Senator, Nevada

W e give our sincere appreciation to Georgia Hughes, the New World Library editorial director, who has worked on this book with patience and tons of encouragement. Thank you, Alexander Slagg, who had the brilliant idea for this book.

We are grateful to the diligent copyeditor Priscilla Stuckey, art director Mary Ann Casler, type designer Tona Pearce Myers, managing editor Kristen Cashman, our enthusiastic publicity manager Monique Muhlenkamp, the wise marketing director and associate publisher Munro Magruder, the wonderful visionary Marc Allen, and to all the staff at New World Library.

A hearty and sincere thank-you to Harold Klemp and to Joan Klemp for inspiring us on our journey of giving service by writing books about the animal-human spiritual bond.

We thank all the animal rescue volunteers and staff of organizations who talked to us about the wonderful work they do to save animals. Your interviews, generosity, and wisdom made this book possible. To the people who survived Hurricane Katrina and shared your reunion stories and courage with us we are especially grateful.

Our gratitude to Matt McCullough and Catherine OMara, who facilitated our request to Senator John Ensign for the inspiring foreword he wrote for this book.

Our special appreciation to the people who have endorsed the book.

Some people were so invaluable that parts of this book could not have been written without them. Thank you to Barbara J. Gislason, chair for the TIPS American Bar Associations Animal Law Committee and Animal Disaster Relief Network.

We especially appreciate Amelia Kinkade for introducing us to Rue McLanahan, and also to Tammy Masters and Lorie Zerweck for sharing their Hollywood connections to animal-loving celebrities. And thanks, Claudie Courdavault, for translating Brigitte Bardots letters from French to English.

To our friends, who supported us and went through long periods of time without hearing from us but welcomed us back after we emerged from the long winter of 2006, thank you.
