Praise for Rescued
Rescued is a riveting book about amazing people who truly make a huge difference to countless animals with whom we share our homes and our planet. Its personal stories about unsung and selfless heroes who work behind the scenes clearly illustrate the deep passions that bind us to a wide variety of animals.

Through firsthand accounts of the sweeping tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, this indispensable primer on disaster response and support networks melts away the notion that a cat or dog is anything less than a family member.
Jonathan Balcombe, author of
Pleasurable Kingdom: Animals and the Nature of Feeling Good
Hurricane Katrina taught us that public policy must be revised to reflect the love between people and their nonhuman family members. Rescued is a finely written, touching, and important book that will warm the hearts of all readers whose animals are an indispensable part of the family.

H urricane Katrina was one of the worst human tragedies in American history and brought unforgettable images of destruction and despair. Once the people whose homes and lives had been ravaged began to cope with the storms immediate aftermath, another crisis emerged: the plight of the tens of thousands of pets who were left to fend for themselves and the desperate owners who returned, at great risk to themselves, to search for them. It is important to tell their stories so we can learn from both the successes and disappointments of that unforgettable ordeal.
John Ensign, DVM

Our special appreciation to the people who have endorsed the book.
Some people were so invaluable that parts of this book could not have been written without them. Thank you to Barbara J. Gislason, chair for the TIPS American Bar Associations Animal Law Committee and Animal Disaster Relief Network.
We especially appreciate Amelia Kinkade for introducing us to Rue McLanahan, and also to Tammy Masters and Lorie Zerweck for sharing their Hollywood connections to animal-loving celebrities. And thanks, Claudie Courdavault, for translating Brigitte Bardots letters from French to English.
To our friends, who supported us and went through long periods of time without hearing from us but welcomed us back after we emerged from the long winter of 2006, thank you.
