Peirce Charles Sanders Peirce 18391914 is generally regarded as the founder - photo 1

Peirce

Charles Sanders Peirce (18391914) is generally regarded as the founder of pragmatism, and one of the greatest ever American philosophers. Peirce is also widely known for his work on truth, his foundational work in mathematical logic, and an influential theory of signs, or semiotics. Albert Atkin introduces the full spectrum of Peirces thought for those coming to his work for the first time.

The book begins with an overview of Peirces life and work, considering his early and long-standing interest in logic and science and highlighting important views on the structure of philosophical thought. Atkin then explains Peirces accounts of pragmatism and truth, examining important later developments to these theories. He then introduces Peirces full accounts of semiotics, examines his foundational work on formal and graphical logic, and introduces Peirces account of metaphysics, the least understood aspect of his philosophy. The final chapter considers Peirces legacy and influence on the thought of philosophers such as John Dewey and Richard Rorty, and highlights areas where Peirces ideas could still provide important insights for contemporary philosophers.

Including chapter summaries, suggestions for further reading and a glossary, this invaluable introduction and guide to Peirces philosophy is essential reading for those new to his work.

Albert Atkin is a senior lecturer in the Department of Philosophy, Macquarie University, Australia. He is the author of The Philosophy of Race (2012).

For Chris Hookway

There are far too many people to thank individually, but to mention a few, I would like to thank Louis Gregory, Stephen Gadsby, Angus Hamilton, Charlie Wiggins, Jeff Zaroyko, David Parissi-Smyth, Yu Fai Lam, Chris Masia, Ali Aziz, and all the students who have studied Peirce with me at one time or another. I would also like to thank the various colleagues who have talked with me about Peirce over the years, in particular Cathy Legg and Richard Menary. However, special thanks must go to Chris Hookway, who has inspired and encouraged my work on Peirce from the very beginning. I am deeply grateful to him.

On a much more personal level, this book took far longer to complete than I had initially intended, in large part because, following the births of my children, I took extensive breaks from philosophy and academia to be with them. I feel very fortunate to have been able to do this and still be allowed to produce this book, especially in a time when academic employment is so precarious for so many and the need of a separate personal life frequently given little regard. Thankfully, unlike very many others, I have not in the end had to choose between a philosophy career and being a parent, and I owe my colleagues at Macquarie University a huge debt of gratitude for their support in this. Such attitudes are contributing to a steady but welcome change in the academic climate. I would also like to thank Adam Johnson and Tony Bruce at Routledge for their patience and encouragement throughout. Finally, thanks go to my partner, Hannah, for her unwavering faith and support, and to my children, Tristan and Iris, who have caused delays, distractions, chaos and stresses for which I shall remain forever thankful.
