Preface
These proceedings of the Society's 22nd Annual Meeting contain sixteen of the papers delivered at the Poitiers conference. They were chosen to offer a variety of perspectives on the central theme of "France in the New World," and contain an unusually high proportion of papers from our French colleagues. This extensive French participation was indeed one of the remarkable and stimulating features of the conference, held in a town within easy reach of so many of the sites associated with French Atlantic history: La Rochelle, Rochefort, Brouage and so forth.
