In the fall of 1964 I had completed writing my Ph.D. thesis on "Freud and Political Theory," and was waiting for Harvard formally to award my degree. With a background in social philosophy, I approached Freud's work with the same care I would have brought to bear on the writings of such giants in the history of ideas as Jean-Jacques Rousseau or Edmund Burke. It would have raised fewer eyebrows in my profession had I been working on the thoughts of St. Augustine or St. Thomas Aquinas, for example, but Freud's theories seemed sufficiently commanding to deserve my full-scale attention.
