1 Dayneford's Library: An Introduction
Great sexologist though he was, Havelock Ellis was not very perceptive when he failed to follow up an offhanded comment of his in the third edition of his pioneering study, Sexual Inversion: "There are... certain avocations to which inverts seem especially called. One of the chief of these is literature" (293).
It is precisely literature's contribution to the formation of homosexual "group consciousness"how gays are shaped and viewed by the historical momentthat concerns us in this study of gay writing of a hundred years ago. How did authors dealing with homosexuality view themselves? How did others view them? As David Bergman notes in his study of gay American literature, literary representation "has been of greater importance for gay communities than for any other ethnic, national, or religious group" (9). Relying perhaps too heavily on the stereotype of gay men being more literate than their contemporaries, he nonetheless argues persuasively that for turn-of-the-century homosexuals, lacking a viable gay cultural heritage, "their sense of being gay relied... intensely on literary representations" (59). Homosexuality, Bergman argues, is a literary construct for many gay people (6); but as we shall see, the

relevant literature from a century ago indicates that any single construct was far from coherent or settled. Gay literature, arising in America for the first time in any force, was in a state of flux. There was, in fact, no single gay literary construct; there were many.
