In Those Days is the candid, often funny, autobiography of a twentieth-century American diplomat who spent most of his life in high-level diplomacy in Asia and Africa. The story takes James Spain form an Irish Catholic childhood in gangster-era Chicago through military service as Douglas MacArthurs photographer in occupied Japan and university life at Chicago and a Ph.D. from Columbia. His Foreign Service career brought postings in Islamabad, Istanbul, and Ankara and four ambassadorships--in Tanzania, Turkey, the United Nations (as deputy permanent representative), and Sri Lanka.Spains memoir offers readers a firsthand account of U.S. diplomacy and of a family that tied its experiences to the events of contemporary history. He writes of personal triumphs and family tragedies and speculates on the meaning of it all, including the joys and tribulations of retirement in Sri Lanka.Published in cooperation with the ADST-DACOR Diplomats and Diplomacy Series.

The ADST-DACOR
Diplomats and Diplomacy Series
For more than 220 years, extraordinary men and women have represented the United States abroad under all kinds of circumstances. What they did and how and why they did it are not well known by their compatriots. In 1995 the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) and Diplomatic and Consular Officers, Retired (DACOR) created a book series to increase public knowledge and appreciation of the involvement of American diplomats in the events of world history. The series seeks to demystify diplomacy by telling the story of those who have conducted our foreign relations, as they saw it and lived it.
If the twentieth century was the American Century, James Spain was its classic product. From Chicago in 1926 to Sri Lanka in 1997, he has blazed a trail of high adventure and highly intelligent public service. His is a tale of the son of Irish immigrants who spent his childhood in "Al Capone country" and moved on, through military, academic, CIA, and Foreign Service encounters, to deal with mountain tribesmen and U.S. senators, African and Asian heads of state, and U.S. secretaries of state. It is diplomatic life on the edge, told with a bluntness leavened with feeling and humor. His delightful, incisive, often touching account of those years spent bouncing around the world with his family while ably serving his country is a very human one, with its full share of accomplishment and tragedy. In the process we also learn a lot about the practice of U.S. foreign relations.
