From DJ Flap - George Wingfield was a major figure in the early decades of the twentieth century, and his legacy is felt throughout the state today. He became a significant power in Nevada partly because he remained in the state with all of his money instead of leaving as other millionaires had done. His authority gradually reshaped the state. Preface
I first became aware of George Wingfield's dominant position in twentieth-century Nevada when I was hired in the early 1980s to organize his enormous collection of papers at the Nevada State Historical Society. At that time there was little scholarly history about this important Nevada figure, but popular legends abounded. I wondered about this millionaire banker who was also reputed to be a gangster and a sinister political boss. After reading Wingfield's mail every day for almost three years, I was sufficiently intrigued to want to tell the actual story, which was as fascinating in its own right as all the myths and rumors.
George Wingfield's career was controversial, and his legacy to the state was mixed. Even thirty years after his death, no one that I interviewed was lukewarm about the man. Everyone had a strong opinion about him, whether positive or negative. Yet his centrality to Nevadaand especially to its economy, based on marketing legalized vices as recreational activity for touristsis undeniable. For a brief period he was, indeed, the virtual owner and operator of the state of Nevada, both politically and economically. I hope that this biography will explain the origins and the nature of that tremendous power and will accurately depict Wingfield's uses of it. At the same time I have tried to present not only the political and economic consequences, but also the personal context in which these events occurred. Thus my biography of George Wingfield reconstructs, to the extent possible, his own view of the events in which he participated.
