If a thing is worth doing, surely it is worth doing badly
Alice Beltin labored up the thin wooden outer stairway leading to Josephine Goss's tiny apartment above Fulmer's dress shop. She opened the weather-stained door, streamed into the limited sitting room, and cried, "Oh, Josie. I think my Harry's going crazy." From the day thirty-one years before, when Alice and Harry had married, Josephine Goss, Alice's best friend, had suspected that Harry Belten was crazy. Thirty-one years' knowledge of him fed the suspicion. Her friend's announcement came now as no surprise.
"The violin again?" she asked, but as though she knew.
"Yes," Alice said, almost sobbing, "but worse this time, much worse. Oh God!" She put her hands to her head. "Why was I born?"
"Well, what is it?" Josephine asked.
"Oh God," Alice moaned.
"What is it?" Josephine lanced at her.
Alice snapped her head up, to attention. "A concert. He's going to give a concert. He's going to play in front of people."
Josephine slumped a little in her disappointment. "Is that all? He's played in front of people before, the jerk. Do you want some tea?" she asked in a tone which considered the subject changed.
