Chapter 1 Southern Sweden, 1880
"You're late coming home," Papa said gruffly.
"I stopped to skate on the Peterson pond," Carl explained.
"You're fifteen now," Papa reminded him. "You're no longer a boy who can play whenever he pleases."
"Papa, what's the matter?" Carl asked, taking off his worn boots and warming himself at the fireplace.
"I must talk to you like a man. It is hard to say this, but I must. Our farm does not make enough money for us to live. You have to quit school and get a job."
"You mean quit school forever or just for awhile?"
Papa's face looked old and worried. His brow was wrinkled. "I don't know," he said softly. Then he looked into Carl's eyes and when he spoke again, his voice was full of certainty. "You know how poor the crops have been. The drought has gone on for four years. They predict it will continue. We can't grow enough food to eat or wheat to sell."
"I'll work harder, Papa," Carl pleaded. "I'll work on the farm every afternoon and on weekends."
