Many people encouraged me to write a book about my experiences working on the New York subways. Pierre Bouvier and Al Swerdlow stand out in my mind.
Steve Downs, Marjorie George, Alan Lefkowitz, Charlie Post, Al and Bertha Swerdlow, and Josephine Teng read the manuscript, in full or part, and made helpful suggestions. I am deeply grateful to them. Joanne Foti contributed her whimsical subway map, grappling with the concept of "Brooklyn Bridge" as a station underground instead of a span over water. I also specially appreciate the efforts of Michael Ames, acquisitions editor at Temple University Press, who discerned promise in the initial eight-hundred-page manuscript and nudged me along as I trimmed and shaped it into its current form.
I also thank the many friends who helped me survive my four years in transit. Although I cannot name them all, I am especially indebted to Ruth and Chuck Hoffman, Alan Lefkowitz, Jim Murphy, Anne Sherry, Anita Waters, and the late Jessica Atlas.
Steve Downs gave me indispensable help in the preparation of the Afterword to this book.

Introduction
I was born in the South Bronx, in 1949. My family lived there until we moved to the northeast part of the same borough when I was almost ten years old. I attended city public schools and graduated from the High School of Music and Art.
