PREFACE
Can you tell the good guys from the bad guys by the hats they wear?
In the pioneer days, a forest was a fearsome thingan evil hiding place for wild animals and wild Indians. "Cut down the trees," the pioneers said. "Kill the wild animals!"
In the middle of America's history, the lumberman searched for quick profits in timber. "Cut-it-out and get-it-out!" they shouted in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
In the latter half of the twentieth century, environmentalists became concerned about America's land, receding forests, and disappearing wild animals. They cried, "The pioneers were bad guys! Loggers are still bad guys!"
Yet environmentalistsand everyone elsecontinued to build houses and use wood products. People need forest production jobs. So, who are the bad guys?
Yesterday's pioneers tried to provide food and safety for their families. Yesterday's lumbermen lacked the conservation knowledge of today's foresters.
It is no longer simply a question of good guys and bad guys. The question is, how can we balance the need for forest products with the best interests of environment?
