This book owes its existence to a village of people: Our good friends and longtime agents Amy Moore-Benson and Donald Maass were instrumental in finding a home for the book, and attorneys Ed Klaris and Jonathan Kirsch shepherded us through various contractual, copyright and trademark issues. Megan Beatie and Meryl Moss donated their time as publicists. The Norton people were wonderful to work with: Robert Weil, who loved the project from the beginning and gave us overall advice; Will Menaker and Marie Pantojan, whose editorial hands were steady but sure; Peter Miller, whose publicity ideas and strategic planning were vital; and Mary Austin Speaker, whose beautiful design is evident throughout. Justice David Ellis of the Illinois Appellate Court, an Edgar Awardwinning author himself, was deeply involved with the project. Erin Kresse was the books original caretaker and creator of www.anatomyofinnocence.com, bringing her years of journalism and editorial expertise to the project. Ashley Stead and Alejandra Barcenas, the Student Directors of Life After Innocence, were key to working with our exonerees. Additional thanks go to all the student members from Life After Innocence, especially Katie Burnett, Jordan Fries, Sarah Patarino, Kathleen Hennessy, Margie Kennedy, Megan Fahey and Carly Cochran. Rob Warden of the Center on Wrongful Convictions graciously donated the Arthur Miller material and offered valuable advice. Of course, we want to express our immense gratitude to each and every one of our writer friends who contributed so much time and effort to bring these astonishing stories to the page and to publicize the book. Finally, we must share our awe and respect for each of the men and women, the exonerees, whose stories are presented here. Their courage shines as a beacon for everyone involved with the book.

ABOUT THE EDITORS
LAURA CALDWELL is the best-selling author of fourteen novels as well as the acclaimed nonfiction work Long Way Home:A Young Man Lost in the System and the Two Women Who Found Him. Her short fiction has appeared in several award-winning anthologies. Caldwell formerly practiced as a civil trial attorney and now is a professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
In 2008, she founded Life After Innocence at Loyola, to aid persons wrongly convicted. Since its founding, Caldwell has served as LAIs director, working with dozens of staff members and law students who advocate for innocent people adversely affected by the criminal justice system, helping them reenter society and enabling them to reclaim their rights as citizens through individualized legal and support services and wider-reaching public policy initiatives. LAI helps them find homes to live in, connects them with jobs, teaches them the basic necessities for functioning in present-day society and assists them in expunging their records and pursuing compensation from the state. LAI is now a model for similar projects around the world.
Caldwell is grateful to the exonerees for having the courage to tell their stories so unflinchingly, and to the writers, who gave of themselves to ensure the book is the best it can be. She also thanks Leslie S. Klinger for his tireless efforts in coediting Anatomy of Innocence.
LESLIE S. KLINGER is the New York Times best-selling editor of the Edgar Awardwinning The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes and numerous other annotated books and anthologies. He also coedited, with Laurie R. King, the anthologies A Study in Sherlock, the Anthony Awardwinning In the Company of Sherlock Holmes, and Echoes of Sherlock Holmes.
Klinger formerly served as the SoCal Chapter President and on the National Board of the Mystery Writers of America and is the Treasurer of the Horror Writers Association. He practices tax, estate planning and business law in Los Angeles, where he lives with his wife, dog and three cats.
Born and raised in Chicago, Klinger is a longtime supporter of Loyola University Chicagos Life After Innocence and has volunteered his assistance on tax matters. He was thrilled to be asked by Laura Caldwell to coedit Anatomy of Innocence and to have an opportunity to work with her, the amazing individuals whose stories are told in the book and the equally amazing writers who tell them.
