In the writing of this autobiography I have not relied entirely upon memory, which in my case has remained gratifyingly vivid and dependably accurate. Fortunately, as a youngster I began to keep diaries, which however neglectful of thoughts, faithfully set down dates, names of places and persons. Habitually also throughout the years I preserved published pieces, manuscripts of deliverances, letters, notes, reports of events upon which I could draw. A considerable store of these are on file in requested collections in the libraries of Baylor University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and may be consulted by those interested.
Many friends and most of my family read portions or the whole of this book before it went to press. They verified facts in the narrative and offered valuable suggestions. I regret that there is not space to mention each one.
To the Editorial Committee, Messrs. James E. Wood, Jr., E. Hudson Long and David A. Cheavens, I owe a debt beyond my power to pay for painstaking work which not only made the manuscript ready for the printer but resulted in my expanding the contents to include much that might have otherwise been conspicuously omitted. To Mrs. Norris G. Davis, wife of a distinguished professor of journalism in the University of Texas, I am indebted for patient, beautiful typing through several revisions until the final copy emerged. Most of all I wish to express my gratitude to all those who encouraged, even urged, me to undertake this endeavor.
