A trip to Memphis wouldnt be complete without Rendezvous barbecue.
Take away music and Memphis would lose its soul. Memphis may owe its existence to the mighty Mississippi, but it is music that has defined this Southern metropolis. Memphis music started with the spirituals and work songs of poor Mississippi Delta cotton farmers who came to Memphis and created a new sound: the Memphis blues. The blues then spawned its own offspring: soul, R&B, country, and, of course, rock n roll as sung by a poor truck driver from Tupelo, Mississippi, named Elvis Presley.
On any given night you can find joints where the music flows as freely as the booze, and sitting still is not an option. On Beale Street, music wafts from inside smoky bars out onto the street, inviting you to come inside for a spell. And on Sundays, the sounds of old-fashioned spirituals and new gospel music can be heard at churches throughout the city.

Memphis music is the backbeat of any visit to the city, but it by no means is the only reason to come. For as rich and complicated as Memphiss history is, this is a city that does not live in its past. Since the 1990s, Memphis has gone through a rebirth, giving new life to the region as a tourist destination. An NBA franchise (the Grizzlies) arrived, the National Civil Rights Museum opened on the grounds of the historic Lorraine Motel, a fantastic AAA baseball field opened downtown, and Memphis made its mark with films such as Hustle & Flow, Forty Shades of Blue, and Black Snake Moan.
While youre here, you can sustain yourself on the citys world-famous barbecue, its fried chicken and catfish, and its homemade plate lunches, not to mention nouveau Southern eats. Eating may not be why you come, but it might be why you stay. Memphians are gregarious and proud of their city. Dont be surprised if someone invites you over for a Sunday fried chicken supper.

You can knock out Memphiss main attractions in a weekend, but it takes a bit longer to soak up the citys special mojo: the music, food, and laid-back attitude. In fact, if you want more than just a taste of Memphiss famous blues, its legendary barbecue, or its rich history, plan to stay at least a week.
Feasting on Rendezvous barbecue is part of the Memphis experience.
Choose downtown Memphis as your home base. The city center is home to the best bars, restaurants, sports venues, live-music clubs, and, of course, Beale Street. Downtown is also the liveliest, and one of the safest, parts of Memphis after the sun sets.
While a lot of Memphiss attractions are downtown, others are located in the eastern and southern stretches of the city. A free shuttle is available to Graceland and Sun Studio from downtown, but for other attractions like the Stax Museum of American Soul Music and the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, you will need a car or taxi. Take note that two of the citys best barbecue joints (a Memphis must), as well as its most famous juke joints, are not within walking distance of downtown.

Memphis is a city with four seasons. The average temperature in January is 41F, and in July it hits 81F. Summer is certainly the most popular season for visitingElvis Week in August sees the most visitors of allbut the hot, humid Memphis summer is not for the faint of heart. Even in the South, where people are used to hot and humid, the Memphis humidity can be oppressive.
The best time to visit Memphis is May, when summer is still fresh and mild, and the city puts on its annual Memphis in May celebration. Memphis in May includes the World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest, the Beale Street Music Festival, and the Memphis International Festival.
Fall is also a good choice. The Memphis Music and Heritage Festival held over Labor Day weekend is a great reason to come to Memphis, and probably the best choice for fans of traditional Memphis music.
But if you cant come when the weather is temperate, dont fret. Memphis attractions are open year-round, and the city continues to rock, day in and day out.
Visitors making a getaway to Memphis should be able to subsist on public transportation, ride-hailing companies, and taxis. Memphis also has Ride the Roo, a sleek black mini-bus (which serves alcohol) that makes 12 stops along nightlife-heavy areas in Overton Square and Cooper-Young.
If you are flying in, Memphis has international airports, which generally have the best airfare deals.
A cell phone with a good roaming plan and Wi-Fi should cover your basic needs, but a calling card that will work at pay phones and hotels, particularly if you are likely to get off the interstate and out of the range of cell phone signals, isnt a bad idea.
