Book Content:

Nigel opened the door to his lifesdream with the flair that was only Nigels. Come in, he said warmly, as he greeted his very first customers. Nigels partner and sister, Pamela, took apicture of the first of many customers who would walk through the doors of hersand her brothers wonderful new establishment that day. The young mother and her daughter smiled forthe camera, and the little girl walked quickly to the counter which showcasedthe prettiest sweetie-pies that she had ever seen. I love pies and cakes, the sweet littlevoice declared, and Nigel was thrilled to accommodate the dear child. We walk by here every day, the young mothersaid. And every day, my little girl hasbeen counting the days until she would get her very first sweetie-pie. We didnt know exactly what a sweetie-pie was,but the pictures in the brochures and on the front of the store made them lookvery tasty. Well, you can havewhatever you want, my dear, Nigel said to the happy little girl.

While the two ladies enjoyed their sweetie-pies,Nigel explained to them that his grandmother had invented a very special recipefor the most mouthwatering pie shaped cakes that Nigel had ever tasted. Each and every one of his grandmothersdelicious deserts was unique in taste and color. Some were filled with pudding and some weremade of pure cake, with just enough berries or nuts to add extra flavor. Now, finally, Nigel was the proud owner of hisvery own bakery where he could showcase his grandmothers prized goodies andshare them with the world. As a youngboy, Nigel had spent hours in his grandmothers kitchen helping her decoratethe delicious treats, some with frosting, and some with coconut, nuts, fruits, chocolate chips, or any number of mixtures of all of these and more. What do you plan to name your store? thelady asked. Well, for now, itsNigels, but I am still looking for just the right name. I promised myself that I would wait for justthe right name before making a permanent sign, and someday that perfect namewill come to me. Nigels sister wasquick to interject, And, then, it will no longer be just Nigels. Then, ourbakery will also include his business partner, she said, with a grin and a wink. Well, Im sure that it will come to you completelyunexpectedly, from somewhere out of the blue one day, the young woman commented. The little girl had chosen the most colorful ofNigels sweetie-pies, and Nigel smiled as he watched her take the firstbite.

It was not long at all before Nigelwelcomed many more new customers to his bakery who were eager to share hisdream. Nigel welcomed each new customerwith great exuberance, and offered each a buy-one, get-one free coupon fortheir return visit. Nigels sister,Pamela, was the baker of their grandmothers sweetie-pies and Nigel, thecreative one in the family, was the decorator.

At the end of the first day intheir new business, Pamela cleaned up, and Nigel took care of the necessaryfinancials, another of his many responsibilities in his new business. I knew I should have taken more interest inaccounting the way you did, Pamela teased, as she watched her brother. I know you dont mean that, Pamela, Nigelsaid, as he looked over his glasses at his sister. Youre right, she said, her eyesdancing. It was a great first day, though, Nigel, she said. Even I couldsee that. Any plans for theevening? Goodness, yes, Pam. I will be right here, preparing fortomorrow. Pamela had a family of herown, but she worried about Nigel. Iwish you had someone, Nigel, she said. Dont worry about me, Pam. Imfine.

Nigel watched his sister leave tospend the evening with her family, and then he began preparing fortomorrow. He thought about his sisterswords. Nigel wished he had someone, too,but it was difficult for him to meet new people. Pam knew that her brother was gay, but thatdidnt make it any easier for Nigel to meet that special someone. Nigel was shy when it came to intimacy, although he was very outgoing in general. Someday, maybe, he told himself.

On the Wednesday of Nigels secondweek as a proud business owner, Nigel had his back turned when a man walked upto the counter. Excuse me, the mansaid. Nigel immediately turnedaround. Im so sorry, sir. What can I get for you? The man ordered a chocolate-chocolate chip sweetie-piewith chocolate frosting. A gutsy move, sir,Nigel teased. I like to take risks, the man said, as he patted his stomach. Oh, no calories in these sweetie-pies, Nigel assured, with a wink. The man was nice, and one of the few peoplethat Nigel felt immediately comfortable with, as well as felt a definite andimmediate attraction to. Is this togo? Nigel asked. No, sir. I plan to sit right over there and enjoyevery bite of this delight, the man said, and pointed to the far corner. I work at the ad agency down thestreet. Well, let me know if you needanything, Nigel said, and watched as the man walked away. Nigel glanced the mans way a few times whilehe was sitting at the table in the corner, and was a little embarrassed to findthe man looking back. Nigel tried tobusy himself with his work, but he wanted to go over and talk to the man.

Pamela came out of the kitchen witha pan of freshly baked sweetie-pies and noticed Nigels almost stare at the mansitting in the corner. The man walkedback up to the counter. Oh, those smellgood. I may have to move into thisstore. Nigel smiled at him. Can I get you another one? Yes, definitely, to go this time. Im afraid that I must be getting back towork. Nigel packed up not one, but twoof the pie-shaped cakes, and handed the box to the man. Thank you, Nigel, he said, as he read thename on the pin on Nigels shirt. I amDrake Watcourt, and I will be back here tomorrow, I can promise you. He handed Nigel his business card, and thenhe said quietly, My personal number is on the back. Nigel looked down at the card, and said aquiet, thank you. He barely looked atDrake as he left the store.
