They are included, however, since, in some cases at least, the meanings are not quite so obvious and therefore need to be mentioned. It is not the purpose of this work to give the exact meaning of a particular word in a particular case. Such meanings and uses are to be found in commentaries and individual articles on the specific word or subject matter. An Appendix is also included, in which can be found the definitions and/or explanations of some legal and theological terms and other information that will be useful for those working in chancery offices. For words of a more technical nature and for more complete definitions one should consult a commentary or a more specific dictionary. This is especially true regarding words used in philosophy and theology.
A partial list of such books can be found following the Appendix . Reverend Blase J. Cupich, rector/president of the Pontifical College Josephinum, granted me sabbatical leave in 1991 to begin this project. I am indebted first of all to my students, who over the years have made me aware of the need for such a book, and to a number of people whoassisted me in this project: Leo Worner, Peggy Worner, and John C. Thompson. Special thanks are due to my professional colleagues at the Pontifical College Josephinum: Monsignor Gerald F.
Durst, Reverend Arthur J. Espelage, OFM, Reverend D. William Lynn, SJ, and Mr. Peter G. Veracka. Monsignor Raymond L.
Burke of the Office of the Signatura in Rome very kindly gave me permission to use, and supplied me with a copy of, the Vocabularium Canonicum Latino-Anglicum , which he edited for private use with the assistance of Reverend Ronald W. Gainer of the Diocese of Allentown and Reverend Michael J. Gorman of the Diocese of La Crosse. Mr. John R. OBrien. OBrien.
Chorbishop John D. Faris, chancellor of the Diocese of Saint Maron, Reverend Kevin W. Vann of the Diocese of Springfield, Illinois, and Reverend Ignatius Harrington of the Byzantine Melkite Diocese of Newton, Massachusetts, were extremely helpful in the preparation of the Appendix . Thanks must also be expressed to those bishops and their respondents from the various dioceses throughout the United States for their time and effort in supplying me with words and phrases in answer to my letters of request. They helped me, and I hope that this work will be of some value to them and to their staffs. Anthony E. Anthony E.
Cutcher, a senior at the Josephinum. This project could not have reached its final form without the capable assistance of thevery patient and ever pleasant Ms. Marie Mudd, a secretary at the Josephinum. Time and time again she reworked pages of the manuscript on the computer as corrections and changes were constantly being made. I am truly grateful to her.
Words with the same general meaning, but with slight variation of Latin form, are usually listed on the same line; if the variation is extreme, separate entries are given. Latin words which have variations only in spelling have the alternate spelling in parentheses. Main entries for nouns are in the nominative case and appear in bold face, with the genitive and gender in regular type. If variations other than spelling occur (e.g., declension and gender, etc.) these forms appear in bold face in the nominative case without any parentheses. Only the first principal parts of verbs appears in bold face and the conjugation is shown by a number in parentheses after the principal parts. Principal parts are abbreviated except where changes in spelling occur.
Deponent and semideponent verbs are indicated by name as well as by the participial ending in -us. Some verbs have both regular and deponent forms; in these cases one of the forms is given in parentheses without the principal parts. Gerund and gerundive forms which show obligation generally are not included. The same is true for present active and perfect passive participles, since the forms and meanings of these words can be determined from the regular principal parts. Some adjectives have First-Second ( us-a-um ) forms as well as Third declensional forms; both are given with the alternate form in parentheses. The comparative and superlative of frequently used adjectives is included in many instances.
Most adverbs are listed in bold face under the adjective from which they are derived along with the designation adv., but some are listed separately. The letters i and j are listed separately, following the practice of Harpers Latin Dictionary . A list of the books used in the preparation of this dictionary, as well as some other very useful reference works, can be found following the Appendix . Leo F. Stelten
