F or much of the first 4 billion years, kno wn as the P re cambrian, only micro scopic life existe d. F am iliar animals began to appear at the beginning of the Phaneroz oic E on , which is divided into thr ee big er as: the P a leozo ic, Mesoz oic, and Ceno zoic. The P a leozo ic Era lasted 289 million y ears, and it is split into six diff erent periods: the Cambrian, Ord ovician, Silurian, D evoni an, Carbonife rous, and P e rmian. This era f eature d an explosion of diff erent life-fo rms, first in the oceans and then on land. More and more plants and insects appeared on land during the D evonia n. To ward the end of the period, the first animals with four legs cr awled ont o land and fore sts cov ered t he ground. This period ended with a second mass extinction e vent. Devonian Period ( - 358 MYA ) In the C arbonifer ous, the co ntinents moved e ven clos er together . The southern regions we re cov ered w ith ice, but there were al so plenty of tropic al for ests. So me amphibians gave rise t o the first r eptiles. Carbonif er ous Period ( - 298 MYA )
