THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, 2018. We arrived at the 17th and State street appointments entrance of the White House complex around 3:30 p.m. Our interview with the president was set for 3:45, so we only had a few minutes to get through security and into the Oval office. We had spent all day preparing for it, drafting questions and wondering how to best use the forty-five minutes the White House had scheduled for us with the boss. Weve both had conversations with the president countless times, but this one would be different.

The idea for the interview began a couple of months before while we were riding with the president in Beast, the name given to the presidential limousine. That day we had accompanied President Trump to a rally in Evansville, Indiana and were headed back to Air Force One. In the Beast we mentioned to the president that Major Garrett of CBS news had a book coming out in the near future. Despite what the Fake News will tell you, Donald J. Trump is unbelievably accessible to the media. During the campaign he did over seven hundred interviews with the New York Times alone. The president told us he wanted to talk with Major about his book. Majors book, however, was due out in a couple of weeksit was far too late for the president to be interviewed. We also knew that Major had tried to get a sit down with the president but people in the White House had stonewalled him. It was another example of staff making decisions that were detrimental to the president.

The president shook his head.

Why the hell does this keep happening? he asked.

He had already gone through an identical situation a few days before, with Bob Woodward and his book. That book, too, had already been written by the time the president found out that Woodward wanted to speak with him.

Bob Woodward wants to talk to me and hes getting told no, the president said. What am I, too much of a big shot to talk to Woodward? I cant return that guys call? The president was clearly irritated that he wasnt getting his messages.

The president had believed, and rightly so, that without his input Woodwards book would portray him and the White House in a negative light. The book is filled with inaccuracies and lies from disgruntled former staffers.

We mentioned to the president we were writing a new book and told him the title and described what we were working on. He immediately instructed us to come in to see him to discuss it in greater detail.

Following this conversation, we contacted Bill Shine, the Deputy White House Chief of Staff for Communications, to set up a formal interview with the president. Shine confirmed our conversation with the boss and organized the interview.
