I n 1998, Counterfeit Spies investigated two dozen books that purported to be non-fiction accounts of clandestine missions undertaken by secret agents during the Second World War. Some were obscure, such as John Cottell, who claimed to have been awarded numerous decorations for gallantry that mysteriously had not been recorded in any official archive, while others like the Countess of Romanones (The Spy Wore Red) appeared remarkably unembarrassed to be exposed as a fraud.
