The Power of Small Bonsai
Small bonsai trees impart a charming look and feel to your modern living space!
My bonsai trees are placed
on a rack on a balcony that
gets poor lighting, but I can
enjoy the bonsai experience
without depriving them.
To make up for the lack of
sunlight, I use a grow light.
My wife also participates in
caring for the bonsai. It is a
very important aspect of our
free time.
Even though its contained in a small pot, the bonsai main
tains its vitality. I am especially drawn to the evergreenness
of the pine variety. I also appreciate experiencing the transi
tion of seasons that I cannot enjoy from my workplace.
HIROMU KUMANISHI, 10-year bonsai enthusiast in
Minato Ward, Tokyo.
ABOVE LEFT AND RIGHT Even in small, sterile places such as the en
trance to an apartment, bonsai cleanse the atmosphere and make the
space seem brighter. (These trees are under 8 inches / 20 cm.)
RIGHT Hiromu Kumanishi says that though the bonsai are small, he
enjoys having this little spot of life and greenery in the middle of his
busy life in a bustling city.
Even in small spaces such as a window sill, having a bonsai makes
for a relaxing environment thats very popular among my students.
Its not surprising that the appreciation of bonsai has spread across
the globe.
Trees in nature emit power and ki (vital energy). Bonsai, on
the other hand, channel that power through small pots and wire.
Nevertheless, even though their energy is contained, they present
themselves in such an artistic way.
JESSIE LEE PARKER, yoga instructor and 4-year bonsai
enthusiast in Setagaya Ward, Tokyo.
LEFT Jessie Lee Parker says that bonsai play an important role in
creating a tranquil atmosphere during meditation sessions at his
yoga studio.
I work in an office and
decided to add some
plants to my apartment
because they help me
relax. Thats how it all
began. I started with
typical houseplants, but
slowly introduced bonsai.
Now I have many variet-
ies. I take pictures of the
blooming plants every
day to appreciate their
blossoms and growth. For me now, having bonsai in
my life has become essential.
After all, these are plants that are meant to be observed
and appreciated. With each bend of a branch or with
each bonsai I plant, I can see the uniqueness of the
individual bonsai. I find this very appealing.
RUTSUKO KANEKO, 6-year bonsai enthusiast in
Suginami Ward, Tokyo.
ABOVE AND RIGHT Even in a cramped location, by placing a
bonsai Rutsuko feels that she is bringing energy and vitality into
her home. She says that being surrounded by her favorite plants
is a spiritual aspect of her life.
Kaori Umezawa started attending classes at her local bonsai garden
ten years ago. When she was in her twenties she moved into a well
lit apartment and started taking bonsai more seriously. Her garden,
which is about 19.5 x 13 feet (6 x 4 meters), receives lots of sunlight.
The earlier you take on this hobby, the more trees you can care for
and the longer you can enjoy the experience. In the art of bonsai, you
are considered to be young and up-and-coming if you are in your fif
ties. In which case, you can still look forward to learning and achiev
ing more for decadesmaybe even another forty or fifty years.
The ability to find good trees is important, but I would like to be
able to propagate them myself as well.
YOSHI UMEZAWA, 10-year bonsai enthusiast in Ichihara City,
Chiba Prefecture.
LEFT Living with bonsai allows one to truly take in the change of the
seasons throughout the year. Mr. and Mrs. Umezawa begin and end
each day by appreciating and talking about their bonsai. Sharing their
observations and taking time to really enjoy their bonsai is a part of
the passion for, and process of, caring for them.
I want to pursue quality over quantity. From now on, I
plan to put more effort into design, and show my bonsai
in a gallery.
KAORI UMEZAWA, 10-year bonsai enthusiast in
Ichihara City, Chiba Prefecture.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE FOR APPRECIATING A LIVING PIECE OF ART
How to Appreciate Bonsai
Lets learn the harmony of trees and pots, the vitality and divinity captured
in a moment of time, and the way to appreciate bonsai of all kinds.
APPRECIATE THE BEAUTY OF THE FOUR SEASONS IN A SMALL LANDSCAPE
In twelfth-century China, trees and stones were placed on plate-like earthenware and were called bonsan
or bonkariyama . Later, when the art was introduced to Japan, it evolved into the form we call bonsai, and it
became a common horticultural practice throughout the Edo period.
The art of container gardening is enjoyed around the world, but bonsai brings plants and containers into a
oneness that allows us to appreciate the beauty of a landscape that is complete, yet contained.
It is impossible to bring the splendors of nature indoors on a grand scale, but it is possible to grace our homes
with the sense of solemnity, elegance and solitude that are the essential charm of a bonsai tree. Imitating trees
that have withstood many years of wind, rain and snow, the bonsaiwith its winding branches, thick roots, rough
bark, and white bones that come from season after season of death and rebirthis a unique and self-contained
natural world. It embodies a philosophy and a skill set that the Japanese have long cherished. It is an act of nature
worship that harmoniously corresponds to all the characteristics of the four seasons.

ALCOVE
DECOR
Here, a conifer cascading to the left is used as the main tree, and a hanging scroll is placed in such a way
that branches superimpose the edge. Add grasses and flowers suitable for the season as a secondary
bonsai or plant. The hanging scroll, main tree and the accent plant are placed in an irregular triangle.
The depth elements here are the distant mountain in the scroll, the conifer in the middle, and under
growth (grass or moss) on the floor in the foreground. This gives the alcove the sense of a full landscape.
A TRADITIONAL WAY OF DECORATING WITH THE MAGNIFICENCE OF NATURE
A traditional Japanese way to display bonsai is to create a harmonious arrangement in a confined space such as
an alcove. The decoration of the alcove is called tokokazari . Sekikazari , which literally means decorating a seat,
pertains to the arrangement of bonsai in an area specifically for bonsai display.
As shown above, alcove decoration consists of three elements: the main tree, an accompanying bonsai (the
accent), and a hanging scroll. When the main tree is a conifer, the flowers and grasses accompanying it should rep
resent the season. The main tree is placed in such a way that it flows toward the hanging scroll, and a high table and
a ground plate are laid beneath the bonsai. Choose a hanging scroll (or other wall hanging in a less traditional space)
that complements the main tree well. The sekikazari is a two-part arrangement consisting of main tree and accent.
