FOREWORD
I first met Kerriann Flanagan Brosky at the old Conklin Barn in Huntington in 2005 when Kerriann was giving a historical lecture. Since then, we have successfully investigated nearly one hundred places between her two Ghosts of Long Island books and her current book, Historic Haunts of Long Island.
When I began researching paranormal activity over thirty years ago, it was a magical adventure. I felt I was taking part in one of the short stories about ghosts I had read as a child. Every dark street corner, every old mansion and each candle that flickered inside a carved pumpkin on a chilly Halloween night fulfilled my desire to experience something beyond the physical world. It was that same adrenaline rush most paranormal researchers feel when they experience their very first bump in the night.
Through all my adventures with Kerriann, from gnarly wood, brick and stone mansions with great portraits hung on the walls to woodsy, spooky walks in places where ghosts once fired muskets during the Revolutionary War to cozy taverns whose former owners still haunt present-day patrons, our professionalism and enthusiasm have never waned. As ghost investigators, we have dealt in the spooky and unprovablethe subjective lore of told tales, handed down from generation to generation from one property owner to the next.
During these adventures, Kerriann and I have always stated that we were not trying to prove or disprove anything. Yet, everything we wrote and recorded was cemented with proof from our firsthand experiences and faith in the evidence we gathered through interviews, photos and audio recordings.
Our journey has evolved; our beliefs have become stronger. So I feel this aspect of credible proof is one of the strengths in Kerrianns books and why they are such a good read.
For starters, the people she interviewed are highly respected individuals. As a historian, Kerrianns background research is rock solid. Because each ghost story has similar connective elements, the experiences become more normal than they are paranormal. This enables the reader to accept the premise of the books journey. It also gives the book an appeal to a large audience.
For lovers of Long Island history, Historic Haunts of Long Island will provide well-researched reference material. Preserving history is a challenging task with evidence in many forms, such as oral accounts and physical evidence. The diversity of history found in Kerrianns research provides a depth not found in other ghost books that are simply filled with urban myths.
For lovers of true tales, Kerrianns book will provide an entertaining anthology. Ten of the most popular stories were taken from each of her first two books on ghosts. Ten new investigations were added to delight her current fans with new material.
For the adventurous crowd, Kerrianns book will serve as an exciting journal of two peoples mysterious and exhilarating trek through the veil. The reader will get to walk with us as we explore each place. Its a surprising ride worth taking.
For paranormalists, the book will serve as a ghost hunters how-to guide. It will enhance evidence gathering and problem solving skills. It will show how to select the right tools, and it will make the case for using evidential mediumship to corroborate your evidence.
Mediumship enhances your ghost hunting tools: you gain the same evidence from multiple sources. You can talk directly with the spiritual presence doing the haunting, which provides greater satisfaction than the simple thrill of gathering random evidence. During several investigations with Kerriann, I used my mediumshipI think youll enjoy reading how I acted as my own ghost-hunting device!
As you read Historic Haunts of Long Island, youll experience the joy of life and the mystery of death. There is nothing more certain than our mortality. Abraham Lincoln once said, In the end, its not the years in your life that count. Its the life in your years.
Kerrianns book is a storytelling of the human spiritual experience. Some of her stories are happy, while others are tragic. Yet all are a compelling, must-read for those yearning to know about the souls journey and how spirits communicate with us.

PREFACE
It has been known to me that spirits could manifest themselves into mortals, and that they have always held communion with their brethren in the flesh is not new to me. The law is as natural as gravitation and like it, I presume, will endure forever.
William Sidney Mount
Having studied, researched and investigated close to one hundred haunted locations over a period of ten years, I, like Long Island genre painter William Sidney Mount, have come to understand that life exists beyond this one. Not only do I believe there is a heaven, but I have also experienced firsthand the ability to communicate with those who have crossed over. We are never alone. Those who have come before us, whether they are historical figures or our own loved ones, share in our spiritual journey and guide us along the way.
