FOREWORD
Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less. Marie Curie
During my work with Kerriann on her book projects, our journey evolvedit became more spiritual. In Haunted Long Island Mysteries, Kerrianns latest compendium of historic, ghostly places, this evolution continues with new investigation methods and ghost-hunting tools.
For example, several stories now include my impressions as a psychic-medium. Psychic ability reads the energy of a person or place, to gain knowledge of things, while mediumship is the ability to talk with those in spirit through our intuitive senses of seeing, hearing and feeling. Incorporating these skills in our investigations has helped us corroborate stories of paranormal activity from eyewitnesses.
In our field work, weve always used a few simple, high-tech devices, including cameras, a ghost meter and digital audio recorders. While we still rely heavily on our cameras to find orbs and apparitions, and the ghost meter to locate hauntings, weve changed our audio recording device of choice to the ghost boxa special type of radio.
Spirits use two methods to generate vocal responses from the ghost box. One is by using white noise from the static found between radio stations along the frequency band. The second is human voice, spoken during on-air broadcasts from talk shows, advertisements, weather reports, sporting events and newscasts. Human voice provides the foundation for clear, high-quality answers from the other side. And most importantlythe conversations are live, in real time.
In the future, can we expect technology to talk to the spirit world on demand, using a combination of holographic and synthesized speech gadgetry? The use of the ghost-box radio in Kerrianns new book might offer us a glimmer of this future reality.
One of the coolest features in all of her ghost books is the ability to read a chapter and then go online and listen to the spirit recordings for yourself. These noncorporeal communicators can be quite entertaining, as they comment on various subjects and answer questions we pose to them.
In addition to the spirit recordings, youll find several excellent photos showing paranormal occurrences such as orbs and apparitions throughout the text.
There is truly magic to the exploration of the supernatural world! From jaunts into graveyards and old mansions to intelligent communication with people from the past, each chapter is an exciting journey of discoverywith some mystery and surprises thrown in. And every story is backed by credible historical research, live interviews and analysis of the evidence we gathered during each expedition.
There is something for everyone in this book. If you love history, its in the book. If you like to read ghost stories and urban legends, there are many to peruse here. And if youve ever been curious how a paranormal researcher does their work, youll find it here as well.
Joe Giaquinto medium and paranormal investigator
PREFACE
But if I have succeeded in opening only one closed mind just a fraction to thevery real possibility that objective ghosts do indeed exist, or if only one scepticdecides to seek for him [or her] self to become a ghost hunter, then my journey intothese difficult regions will not have been in vain.Peter Underwood, Ghosts and How to See Them
My fascination with ghosts began at an early age. As I pursued trying to understand them, I was inspired by author and parapsychologist Peter Underwood from England and Austrian American author and parapsychologist Hanz Holzer. My own work has been greatly influenced by Peter Underwood, specifically his ten types of ghosts. Ghosts cannot be defined as any one thing. It is more complex than that. Hollywoods versions of ghosts are usually frightening, demonic specters out to possess the next victim. I have spent the last fifteen years of my life undoing this very unrealistic belief.
For those of you familiar with my work, you may know that this is my fourth ghost book out of the nine books I have written. The journey of investigating over one hundred presumably haunted locales on Long Island, has led me to understand many things, including the importance of these spiritual beings and how they relate to our past and history, to the continuity of life after death and to the ability to communicate with our loved ones after they have passed. It is a far cry to what is often viewed on TV and in the theater.
My books have evolved over the years, and while weaving in important historical information about treasured places on Long Island, my books have become more spiritual.
In reading Haunted Long Island Mysteries, you will learn a great deal about our Revolutionary War past, maritime history, political figures, artists and socialites.
On the chapter about genre artist William Sidney Mount, who died in 1868, you will read the continuing story of the fascinating relationship Joe Giaquinto and I have developed with Mr. Mount throughout the years.
