What, if anything, do dreams tell us about ourselves? What is the relationship between types of sleep and types of dreams? Does dreaming serve any purpose? Or are dreams simply meaningless mental noise--unmusical fingers wandering over the piano keys? With expertise in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience, Owen Flanagan is uniquely qualified to answer these questions. In this groundbreaking work, he provides both an accessible survey of the latest research on sleep and dreams and a compelling new theory about the nature and function of dreaming. Flanagan argues that while sleep has a clear biological function and adaptive value, dreams are merely side effects, free riders, irrelevant from an evolutionary point of view. But dreams are hardly unimportant. Flanagan argues that dreams are self-expressive, the result of our need to find or to create meaning, even when were sleeping. Written with remarkable insight, Dreaming Souls offers a fascinating new way of apprehending one of the oldest mysteries of mental life.

During a memorable summer vacation in 1977 near Bar Harbor on the coast of Maine, I read Freud's TheInterpretationofDreams carefully. Time passed. A decade. And then, on a snowy night in 1988, I gobbled up Allan Hobson's first book on dreams, TheDreamingBrain, after discovering it at Wordsworth in Harvard Square. I remembered that night that my friend Paul Churchland had written that almost nothing was known about sleep and dreams, and I was pleased to think I had found an illuminating, instructive, and empirically well-grounded theory in Hobson's booknow drenched in melted snow, due to my slow, absorbed, page-turning walk from Harvard to Kendall Square, near MIT. By the next day I was back to teaching, family, and preparing for coaching the upcoming Little League baseball season. But by then thinking about dreams had secured its own room in my head, and I started hesitantly to talk and wonder aloud about dreams in my philosophy of mind courses at Wellesley College and Brandeis University.
