Chapter One: The Goldmill House
Mr. Harold Goldmill and his wife Abigail, of 709 E, Dragon Road, were among the happiest couples in town. They were loved and respected pretty well by the neighbors they lived close to and often came into contact with. They were also two of the very few people to be involved in any strange or mysterious activity because most people just didnt tolerate such nonsense. And mysterious activity often occurred in their community as it did throughout the world.
Like most of their fellow neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill didnt go out of their way to find strange or mysterious things to be involved with. They tried to live normal lives, but whenever strange things happened to come their way, they would put up with it as best as they could, which was a lot better than most people. There was some folk in town who viewed the Goldmills as strange and different, but more people loved and respected them.
The town Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill lived in was a small town called Gordonsville. It was a town located about twenty miles from New York City. The town consisted mainly of houses, but in addition to that, there was also a butcher shop, a marketplace, and a library. It was like living in the country, which was a little strange considering how close it was to the biggest city in the United States. Gordonsville was settled sometime during the 1790s. It was a lovely place and many of its citizens proudly called it their home.
The house Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill lived in was an old house. It was built in the early 1800s by Mr. Goldmills great, great grandfather, Ebenezer Goldmill, and his wife Ruth. It stood about twenty feet tall and was made entirely out of bricks, though the roof was made out of green shingles. There was also a chimney made of metal and there was a porch that led to the door of the house. The people in town called it the Goldmill House as it had been in their family for many generations.
Mr. Goldmill was a tall balding man. He had black hair around his head, blue eyes, and wore glasses. He stood about six feet four inches tall. He was the CEO of a retail company called Goldmill Depot. It was a home improvement retail company that had stores throughout most of the United States. It was founded by Mr. Goldmills father, Dennis Goldmill, in 1970. Mr. Goldmill worked hard to run the company that his father started and that was starting to expand to most of the world. He worked at the headquarters in New York City.
Mrs. Goldmill was a petite woman. She had shiny blond hair, green eyes, and stood a few inches shorter than her husband. She worked for a company called Weatherford Health. Her office was in New York City where she took calls for customers who had questions about their health insurance. She would also set up appointments for patients to see their doctor. The office Mrs. Goldmill worked at was located just a few blocks from the Goldmill Depot Corporate Office, where her husband worked every day.
Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill even owned a few horses as did most people in town. In Gordonsville, it was very common to see horses at somebodys house. Mr. Goldmill had raised horses since he was a little boy. He had grown up with these beautiful, graceful animals and had always tried his hardest to take care of them. He also was used to having to save money on hay for them by occasionally taking them to a pasture where they could graze all day long. They could also have water to drink from a pond so they wouldnt go thirsty either.
Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill were very happy with the lives they were living. However, they did wish they had relatives to see more often. Most of their relatives lived in other states far away from New York, so it was difficult for them to see their family members very often. They only got to see them during the holiday season, for Thanksgiving and Christmas and that just wasnt enough time for Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill to see their families.
Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill did have a daughter whom they named Helen Abigail Goldmill and they couldnt have asked for a better daughter. However, they hadnt seen their daughter for a while. In fact, Helen lived in a different world than her parents did. Not a different planet so to speak, but a different dimension. She was very different than her parents and the type of people they lived with. She had abilities that made her very strange to most people, but Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill loved their precious daughter all the same.
The last time Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill had seen their daughter Helen was at her wedding. She married a man in the world she lived in. His name was Richard Marlez and he had abilities like Helen. Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill had met Richard almost two years before they got married. They knew that he was a great influence on their daughter and the two of them were married with their blessing. Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill enjoyed the wedding of their only daughter. It had been a little over two years since they got married.
A few months after the wedding, Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill had received a letter from their daughter which she sent to them with a hawk. The letter was the announcement that she and Richard were expecting a baby boy the following January, which made Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill so excited they both nearly cried. Then, in January, they got another letter announcing the birth of their grandson whom their daughter and son-in-law named Jason Richard Marlez. They saw a few photographs of their grandson, but they had never seen him in person.
Not long after their grandson was born, Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill hadnt received any more letters from their daughter and they were unaware of what was going on with her and her husband and child. They were often worried about their only daughter. It was like she and her husband had to go into hiding with their baby, but how could she just leave them in the dark like this? Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill knew that she and her husband were involved in a war against an evil sorcerer who caused destruction and mayhem.
There had been many disasters that occurred in many parts of the world for a few decades. People were mysteriously killed and buildings were mysteriously destroyed and cars and other vehicles on highways suddenly crashed into each other. Mr. and Mrs. Goldmill knew this had to be from the evil sorcerer that their daughter and son-in-law fought against, but with their baby boy to take care of, Helen and Richard couldnt be involved as much.
As Mr. Goldmill was getting ready for work one evening, he listened to the New York Times News about new stars in the sky. There were also rumors that these disasters that had been going on for about thirty years might have finally been put to a stop somehow. It was June 29, 2001. It was as if the one responsible had finally been defeated. Could this mean the war that Mr. and Mrs. Goldmills daughter was involved in was finally over? Could this mean they would finally get to see their grandson for the first time?
Law Enforcement is baffled as to how these disasters may finally have been put to an end, said Larry Rickman, one of the spokesmen on the news. These disasters have been going on at least since 1970, which makes it thirty-one years.
Many cops have tried to put a stop to these strange events for years, said a lady Hannah Aarons. But many of them have been killed in the process.
Well, Im off to work, Abigail, said Mr. Goldmill.
Okay, said Mrs. Goldmill. Have a good day, Harold.
Then Mr. Goldmill walked out of his house and into the garage where his SUV was kept. As he was getting into his car, Mr. Goldmill thought he could hear footsteps close by. He looked around but saw nobody in the garage. This made him feel a little uneasy, but he tried to just ignore it and head for work. He had no idea who could have been in the garage, but he still had a strange feeling like he was being watched or something.
