New York Times bestselling author Charles Bosworth Jr.

On December 27th, 2011, Russell Faria returned to his Troy, Missouri, home after his weekly game night with friends to an unthinkable, grisly scene: His wife, Betsy, lay dead, a knife still lodged in her neck. Shed been stabbed fifty-five times.
First responders concluded that Betsy was dead for hours when Russ discovered her. No blood was found implicating Russ, and surveillance video, receipts, and friends testimony all supported his alibi. Yet incredibly, police and the prosecuting attorney ignored the evidence. In their minds, Russ was guilty. But prominent defense attorney Joel J. Schwartz quickly recognized the real killer.
The motive was clear. Days before her murder, the terminally ill Betsy replaced her husband with her friend, Pamela Hupp, as her life insurance beneficiary. Still, despite the prosecutions flimsy case and Hupps transparent lies, Russ was convictedleaving Hupp free to kill again.
Bone Deep takes readers through the perfect storm of miscalculations and missteps that led to an innocent mans convictionand recounts Schwartzs successful battle to have that conviction overturned. Acknowledgments
Telling this incredible story in depth and in truth would not have been possible without the gracious assistance of a great many people. That especially applies, of course, to Russ Faria, whose strength and courage made this story worth telling as a cautionary tale that drives deep into the heart of the American justice system. Russs grace and power under some of the worst circumstances anyone can imagine are the foundation on which this book is built and on which it stands. And his unfailing confidence in coauthor Joel Schwartz as his defense attorney through all of the setbacks and challenges was a humbling, touching, and inspiring honor.
At the top of the list of those the authors must thank is Mary Anderson, whose ferocity in defense of Russ Faria is matched only by her dedication to getting justice for everyone involved in this caseon both sides of the law.
Special recognition must go to Carol McAfee, the woman whose exceptional courage helped find a major piece of the Pam Hupp murder puzzle and who now completes a special picture of the life of Russ Faria.
We also want to give special thanks to the other half of the legal defense teamNathan Swansonwhose expert lawyering was supported by an encyclopedic memory of the facts and fictions in the caseand who is equipped with a remarkably valuable and famously off-beat sense of humor.
Joel Schwartz affectionately acknowledges the special and invaluable support from his wife, Mary Ann Schwartz, an accomplished criminal defense attorney in her own right, who provided an incomparable sounding board and offered valuable suggestions on how to deal with the specific challenges of judicial ineptitude and police corruption that threatened the pursuit of justice in this case.
The list of people and organizations that generously lent their assistance and expertise is long and impressive. The authors are indebted to the man who pushed for justice for Betsy Faria after ten long years, Lincoln County prosecuting attorney Mike Wood, as well as the current Lincoln County Sheriffs Office and Sheriff Richard Rick Harrell. Our thanks and appreciation also go to the OFallon Police Department and especially Detective Kevin Mountain for his tireless assistance and guidance; the St. Charles County Sheriffs Department and the St. Charles City Police Department; the St. Louis County Police Department; the Metropolitan Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis; and attorneys David Butsch and Andrew Beeny. Special thanks also go to St. Charles County prosecuting attorney Tim Lohmar.
Our gratitude also goes to investigative reporter Chris Hayes of FOX 2 in St. Louis, whose recognition of raw injustice drove his relentless pursuit of the facts that could have stayed hidden without his ability to get the story and get it on the air. He is joined in uncovering and reporting that story by Robert Patrick of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. And special gratitude and appreciation go to Cathy Singer, the unrelenting producer of Dateline , and the incomparable reporter and storyteller, Keith Morrison.
There are others who contributed valuable information and insight who prefer to remain unnamed. The authors recognize a deep debt of gratitude to them as well.
And finally, the authors extend their thanks and gratitude to our excellent editor, Michaela Hamilton, and her team at Kensington Publishing for their work in turning our manuscript into the book you hold in your hands. We appreciate their continuing efforts to bring this story to life and to readers.
