Chapter One

Fentar. Fentar!

Yes, Blaylock, came a voice from thedark.

Where are we, Fentar? Whats happened tous?

It was the Tappa Ray, Blaylock. We were bothcaught in the Tappa Ray.

The Tappa Ray! But where are we?

We must be on Earth, Blaylock.

These two menBlaylock: tall, thin, withhorrid yellow and black teeth, and Fentar: a scientist, short andnearly as uglyhad tumbled through space, victims of their own evilplan. When Prince Zincors father died, theyd seized the thronefrom Zorons young prince. They locked both him and his twin sisterPrincess Zayla in the palace dungeon, but a faithful servant ofZincors father helped Zincor escape into the desert surroundingthe walled city where the palace stood.

Fentar had fired the Tappa Ray over and overinto the desert, hoping it would strike the prince and send him offinto space, so he would no longer be a threat to Blaylocksposition on the throne. But Fentar had not yet perfected thepowerful ray, and instead of sending Prince Zincor to Earth, it hadsnatched Mark Foy, ten years old, from his bedroom window on Earthwhere he sat watching what he thought were strange, green sparklesof light coming from the moon.

Mark and Zincor met in the desert and withhelp from Bazel, aged councilor to Zincors late father, who hadalso been exiled into the desert by Blaylock, managed to upendBlaylocks plan to rule in Zincors place. In the final battle, which took place in Fentars laboratory inside the palace, theTappa Ray had sent Blaylock and Fentar to Earth where they nowstood in the dark, puzzled and angry.

You idiot! roared Blaylock. We weresupposed to send them away!

Yes, yes. I know, the timid Fentar agreed. It was a nasty turn of events.

Blaylock saw someone in the distance walkingdown the sidewalk toward them. He pulled Fentar back from wherethey stood on a lawn in front of a house.

Back there, back there, Blaylock whispered, pointing. He dragged Fentar behind some bushes against the wall ofthe house, and both men watched in silence as a man walking his dogpassed by.

Did you see how he dressed? whisperedFentar. Well need clothing like his or else well never be ableto be seen in public. The two men dressed in black baggy shirtsand pants, appropriate enough on Zoron, but out of place onEarth.

Blaylock glared with his greasy eyes. Andwhere do you think well get clothes like that? We have no money,no nothing. But since its your ideaand a good one, I complimentyou on itwhy dont you go and get us some?

Me? How? Where? From the look on Blaylocksface, Fentar knew better than to argue. All right. All right. Heslunk out from behind the house and checked the street. Empty.

Well? Blaylock said.

Fentar sighed helplessly. He knew hed haveto go, so he tiptoed across the lawn and walked slowly down thesidewalk.

Blaylock nestled himself behind the bush andagainst the wall and waited. Fentar circled the block until he sawsome things waving in the breeze behind one of the houses. When heinvestigated, he saw clothing hanging from ropes stretched acrossthe backyard. He crept quietly past the side of the house and tookwhat he needed. He rolled everything into a ball and hurried backto Blaylock. The two men changed, stuffing their old clothes into atrash can.

Fentar, quite pleased with himself forsolving their problem, pointed at the moon hanging full and brightin the sky. Thats where we came from. Zoron is in anotherdimension between Earth and its moon. The Tappa Ray broke throughthe dimensions. I knew Id be able to make it do that. Andand herewe are.

Blaylock narrowed his eyes and stared at hispartner. Have you noticed one little flaw in your plans?

No, Fentar said thoughtfully. I knew Icould get through the dimensions

Were here instead of the prince,Blaylock growled from between clenched teeth.

Oh, that. Well, it wasnt my fault. Thatstrange boy. It was his fault. His fault and Prince Zincors. Theylanded us here Look, did you see it? Fentar grabbed Blaylocksarm as both men stared at the heavens. There. There. Did you seeit, Blaylock? Did you see it? The moon! Watch the moon!

Yes, I see it. Blaylock focused hisattention on the moon and saw pinpoints of green light burst fromits surface. What is it?

Those bursts of lightgreen lightcame fromZoron. From the Tappa Ray.

What? Why? Blaylock asked inconfusion.

A lightning quick burst of green in thenearby night sky caught Fentars eye. He stepped onto the lawn andstudied the houses on each side of the street.

That burst of light was right above us,said Blaylock. What does it mean, Fentar?

I know! The strange boy! Thats why heseemed so strange. He must have come from Earth! We brought him toZoron from Earth by mistake.

Blaylock glared. When you say we

Well, maybe not we. I guess it wasme, Fentar said softly.

Are you telling medo you mean beforeyou corrected the Tappa Ray, you brought an Earth boy to Zoron bymistake?

Uh, well, maybe I did.

Maybe?

Uh, I guess I did.

You guess?

All right. I did. I did. The Tappa Rayworked in reverse, said Fentar, ashamed. But Blaylock, thoseflashes. Especially the one nearby. I think the boys returning.Yes, theyre sending himtheyve sent him back to Earth. Hemust be here in one of these houses.

Yes, but which house? asked Blaylock. Lookfor him. Look for him. Maybe he landed outdoors like we did. Maybehell even pop up in the same spot as us.

Both men stepped out onto the lawn, hoping tosee Mark Foy materialize where they had materialized. They spun inslow circles, eyes eager, both ready to pounce on the boy.

Where is he? Where is he? Blaylocksaid.

Fentar stopped circling. Oops, hemumbled.

Blaylock stood still. Oops? Did I hear yousay oops?

Perhaps I shouldnt have changed the TappaRay setting to confuse the boy when I thought we were sendinghim away.

Explain? ordered Blaylock, staring at hisnervous companion.

Well, I wanted to I didnt know it wouldHow could I tell we would be the ones?

Stop blathering, you imbecile. How much didyou change the setting?

Only a few points. Two.

Is two points a lot? Does that mean hereturned near here?

Oh, yes! Very near here. You saw the greenburst.

But where did he land? In whatdirection?

Fentar shrugged his shoulders.
