A thousand thanks to Clifford Smith, Irma Sallee, Sandra Melot, and my daughters, Tricia Bell and Rosi Gellenbeck, for helping get this book into print. A Faithful Father would still be in manuscript form had it not been for their help.

W hat does God expect of fathers? Is it to provide only material needs for his children? Does a father have the option to leave the care of his child to the mother or other caregivers? Did God design a place in a childs heart that only the father can fill? What is a fathers duty?
The world, in general, expects more from a Christian father, but does not God require loyalty and compassion from all fathers toward this precious gift that he alone can give? Embracing this responsibility is not an easy job. One must struggle through sleepless nights, staggering hospital bills, temper tantrums, and embarrassing behavior. Anyone raising a family knows it is constantly necessary to make personal sacrifices for their children so that every child can become secure, mature, and emotionally stable. What a heaven on earth our world would be if every father accepted with enthusiasm his duty of leading his children.
Being a Christian father is much more than taking your sons and daughters to church, more than saying grace over meals, more than reading the Bible and praying with them, although all these are important. Dont we pray, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done in earth as it is in heaven? (Matthew 6:10) Are Christians given the option of pursuing personal dreams out of Gods will? Arent individual aspirations also to be committed to Him? Christ said, Love one another as I have loved you. How did Jesus show love? He showed love by sacrificing himself, therefore, should we not sacrifice daily for one another within the family? If parents submit to Gods will, He will put the Holy Spirit into our earthen body, enabling us to do His will as he did my father, Alvin. In this book, you will see Alvin keeping his faith steady and his family happy when material possessions were being stripped away. You will see Mabel making new flour sack dresses for her girls when she had only two dresses of her own.
I wrote this book to challenge and encourage fathers to make parenting their number one priority. I believe when the creator of life gives a child, it is the parents responsibility to love that child as much as Jesus loves it. Jesus gave his life for every child and parents should likewise give themselves to the point of sacrificing a portion of our lives, especially during a childs early childhood.
I have woven my early childhood memories into the story because it is the story of an ordinary family. It is the account, like many others, of a family guided by a father who himself was struggling to know and do Gods will. You might imagine Alvin as a kind of spiritual hero. He was human with human flaws. I hope it will inspire fathers to take up their God-given duties so that Proverbs 17:6, The glory of children are their fathers, will be true as it was in my childhood.
I speak from experience. As a child, I saw Gods love demonstrated through my fathers actions. I never feared being abused, not even ignored, much less deserted. It has always been easy for me to trust God; because my father, through his devoted care for our family, proved to me that God is love.
If you are a father, ask God for strength, a desire, and grace to do your duty from this day forward. If you are a child reading this book, ask yourself this question, Am I filling my God given roll within my family? If you are a mother ask yourself, Am I respecting and honoring my husband and fostering a positive joyful attitude in my children so they can face lifes difficulties? By allowing the Holy Spirit to live through us, we can become parents that will bless our children with stability to be happy, responsible adults who hopefully will submit to Gods will and also be successful parents.

Be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear Hebrew 13:5b, 6
M abel awoke to a loving kiss. She gazed into Alvins soft blue eyes as he whispered tenderly, Honey, I better be off, the day is beginning to dawn and I need to get the vegetables picked and taken to the farmers market before it opens at six this morning. Dont worry about my breakfast, your body needs some extra sleep. For breakfast, Ill drop by Moms or buy something at the market; however, I will be home to eat lunch with my wonderful wife.
Mabels heart felt full and happy to be the receiver of his sacrifice and care. Her dream had become a reality! She had love, companionship, and family, things she had yearned for the most since her parents and siblings had been snatched away one by one.
Her mind flew back six years, to that cool September day when she stood in the cemetery beside her beloved papas casket. She was alone and frightened, without a family member to cry with her, to share her sweet memories, to help pay for the funeral expenses, or to help her choose a stone to mark the grave where dear Papa lay. That day, Alvin had drawn close and supported her arm as her trembling legs walked away from her last family member. Mabel shivered at the thought of living alone in the apartment that she and Papa had shared, but Alvin had not let her feel alone. He started coming to see her every day, and her life began to bloom into a happy secure world. Within a few weeks he had proposed, and they were married a month later.
